Erie Otters News Release
The Erie Otters (29-24-1-1) moved into sixth place of the Western Conference standings as they carried over their domination from Saturday night into Sunday afternoon with an emphatic 10-3 win over the Kingston Frontenacs at K-Rock Centre.
Anthony Luciani began the scoring for the Otters 12:24 into the contest as his slipped a rebound from a Brett Thompson through the glove side of Franky Palazzese for his 21st goal of the season.
Thompson then collected a goal in his fifth straight game as he picked the pocket of the Frontenacs defense during the penalty kill and put home a wraparound for his 100th career OHL goal at 15:48.
Tyler Hostetter scored his second goal in as many games as he took a faceoff win by Mike Cazzola and blasted a shot from the slot over the left shoulder of Palazzese to pick up his sixth goal of the season at 17:37. Luciani added his second of the game with 14 seconds left in the first to give the Otters a 4-0 lead into the first intermission.
Former Otter Mitch Gaulton stopped the bleeding momentarily for the Frontenacs at 2:44 with his fourth goal of the season, but Phil Varone answered 31 seconds later to give the Otters another four-goal lead with his 25th goal of the campaign.
At 8:19 of the second, Cazzola found himself all alone in the slot during an Erie power play, where he was able to rifle a shot just under the crossbar for his 14th goal of the season. Shawn Szydlowski then ripped a shot from the slot to pick up a goal in his sixth straight game at 15:06, giving the Otters a commanding 7-1 lead going into the third period.
Szydlowski scored his second of the game at 5:44 of the second to make it 8-1, then the Frontenacs followed with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to five. The Otters matched those tallies with goals by rookies Connor Crisp and Luke Cairns, both assisted by Kingston native Kris Grant, much to the delight of close to 300 of his family and friends in attendance.
The Otters power play continued their recent hot streak by going three-for-seven, while the steady penalty kill was a perfect six-for-six. Thompson tallied a goal and three assists to lead the Otters, while Luciani had a pair of goals and an assist.
