Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michaels Majors played the Ottawa 67's today for the third time this season, and are now officially in double digits in the loss column. It was a back and forth game with stellar goaltending on both sides, but Mrazek was the star of the game making 41 saves on 43 shots, and handing the Majors a 4-2 loss. With the loss, the Majors record falls to 40-10-0-2 on the season.
Mississauga began the game with a lot of energy, spending a lot of time in the offensive zone and throwing their weight around, but after a bad turn over turned into a 2 on 1 for Ottawa, Cody Lindsay put it in an open net, taking advantage of a great feed from Sean Monahan at 2:34 of the first, making it 1-0 Ottawa. Shortly after, Ottawa scored again. The 67's won a face off in the Majors zone and Cody Ceci wristed a shot top corner on JP Anderson at 8:22 of the first to make it 2-0. Tyler Graovac got the assist. Then the game started to get rough, as the Majors began using their size on Ottawa in attempt to slow down the 67's fast forwards. At 14:32 of the first period, Ottawa's Graovac got his second point of the day, jamming the puck in on a scramble in front of JP Anderson and just like that, the Majors were in a 3-0 hole. At 16:10 of the first, the first penalty of the game was called when Ottawa forward Cody Lindsay took a slashing penalty. The Majors capitalized just 22 seconds into the power play when forward Devante Smith-Pelley scored on passes from Brett Flemming and Casey Cizikas, giving the Majors a big goal, and cutting the lead down to two before the end of the first. Ottawa outshot Mississauga 15-12 in the first period.
There were a lot of penalties during the second, with lots of four on four hockey being played. At 16:35 of the second, Ryan Martindale scored a back breaking goal that took a funny bounce off a Majors player in front and fooled JP Anderson. Martindale's goal was unassisted, and was his 31st of the season. The Majors were all over Ottawa in the second, but they could not solve Peter Mrazek, and they went to the locker room down 4-1. Shots on goal were 19-9 for Mississauga in the second.
The Majors began the third period looking for a comeback. They started the period with 3 straight minor penalties, making the comeback that much more difficult. JP Anderson fought off a barrage of shots, keeping the deficit at three. Determined not to lose two in a row on home ice, Maxim Kitsyn scored his first goal as a Major on home ice at 15:45 to bring the Majors within 2 goals. Kitsyn's fourth of the season was assisted by Rob Flick. That was as close as the Majors would get, as they took their second straight loss on home ice. Shots on goal in the third period were 12-10 in favour of Mississauga.
Peter Mrazek was solid throughout the game for Ottawa, making 41 saves in the victory. He was awarded the games second star for his efforts. JP Anderson made 30 saves on 34 shots for the Majors, taking the loss. The games other two stars were Smith-Pelly (3rd) and Graovac (1st).
The Majors will look to rebound this Wednesday when they host the Oshawa Generals at the Hershey Centre in a rare midweek game. Game time is 7:00 PM and tickets are available at the Hershey Centre box office.
MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are still available. While platinum tickets are sold out for the tournament, fans can still purchase red or gold level tickets, starting at just $495.00 for the entire tournament. Call 905-502-7788 x. 1 or visit ticketmaster.ca to order.
