Erie Otters News Release
The Erie Otters (31-27-5-2) played their toughest game yet against the Kitchener Rangers but a Jeremy Morin third period hat trick prevented the Otters from grabbing a win over their Midwest Division rivals as the Rangers came out on top, 5-2, Friday night at Kitchener Memorial Auditorium
The Otters scored the lone goal of the first period on the power play, as Paul Cianfrini fired a shot from the right half-boards that was deflected in by usual defensive partner David Shields, who was credited with his seventh tally of the season at 9:33 to put the Otters in front. The Otters outshot the Rangers, 18-12, after the first 20 minutes.
The second period featured many opportunities for each squad and the Rangers would tie the game at 14:16 when Tyler Randell deflected a shot from Mike Mascioli. The Otters answered back at 15:55 to regain the lead when Mike Cazzola put in a wraparound off the left pad of Rangers goaltender Brandon Maxwell for his 35th goal of the season.
Randell would tie the game 42 seconds later, making the score 2-2 heading into the second intermission. The Rangers controlled the second period with a shot advantage of 21-12.
Morin would take control of the game in the third period, as the Ranger forward continued his season-long assault on Erie goaltending. The game-winner came on the power play with 6:18 remaining, and tallies followed with 4:33 and 21 seconds left, completing Morin's second hat trick against the Otters for a total of 15 goals against Erie this season.
The Otters went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Rangers went 2-for-7 after starting the game 0-for-5. Adam Courchaine made 41 saves in a solid effort for the Otters.
The Otters continue on the road Saturday night as they travel up to Owen Sound to complete their season series against the Attack. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the radio broadcast on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan or online at ottershockey.com.
