Erie Otters News Release

The Erie Otters (15-15-4-1) scored early, but not often as the club dropped a 3-1 decision to Eastern Conference foe Mississauga St. Michaels Majors Saturday evening at the Tullio Arena. The Otters wasted little time to start the scoring as Greg McKegg rifled home his 15th goal of the season just 28 seconds into the contest as he beat Mississauga goalie Chris Carrozzi on the short side from the top of the crease to put Erie ahead 1-0. Line mate Mike Cazzola found McKegg from behind the net to record his 18th assist of the season, while captain Zack Torquato also picked up a helper on the play as the first line continued its stellar play from the night before. But Erie would face penalty problems later in the frame that allowed the St. Michaels Majors to score two power-play goals in less than three minutes to put the visitors on top by a 2-1 margin. Mississauga forward Joseph Corrente found the back of the net at the 7:39 mark to tie the game, then left winger William Wallen would put the Majors ahead going into the second period with his 11th goal of the season on the power-play at 10:13. Erie goalie Jaroslav Janus was busy in the first period as he turned away 13 of the 15 shots he faced, as the Otters fired seven in the direction of Carrozzi. In the second, it was a back and forth period as both teams generated scoring chances and traded hard body checks. Erie had a great chance to tie the game as Anthony Luciani tipped a Shawn Szydlowski pass from just inside the hash marks, but Carrozzi got just enough of it with his upper body to keep the lead safe for the Majors. About a minute later, Mississauga forward Dustin Ekelman deposited a rebound in front of Janus at the 18:43 mark to extend the Majors lead to 3-1 heading into the final frame. Mississauga made things difficult for the Otters in the second, as a stingy defense held Erie to just seven shots in the period, while the Majors collected 12. In the third, the Otters had five power-play opportunities to get back into the contest, but they were unable to capitalize as Carrozzi stole the show in the third period. The Otters peppered the goaltender with numerous chances, but could not find the back of the twine. McKegg was named the game's third star for his goal. The Otters will before for the next eight days as they celebrate the Christmas holiday before traveling to Plymouth to start a three game road trip. They will take on the Whalers on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m.
