
Otters Drop 2018 Opener After Washington's Late Charge

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Washington Wild Things spoiled the Evansville Otters 2018 home opener, beating the Otters 7-4 in front of 2,009 at Bosse Field Friday.
Luc Rennie for Evansville and Chase Cunningham for Washington each tossed 1-2-3 innings in the first.
Evansville's offense rattled Cunningham in the second, striking for two runs.
Evansville's Luis Vilorio hit an RBI single that scored Jeff Gardner to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. Manny Cruz then followed with an RBI single to give Evansville a 2-0 advantage over Washington.
Washington rallied with three runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead, including a home run from James Haris.
Evansville answered in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Toby Thomas to tie the game 3-3.
Following a quiet fourth and fifth innings in the scoring column, the Otters retook the lead in the sixth when Ryan Long doubled to score Vilorio to grab a 4-3 advantage.
In the eighth, Washington made a late charge to take the lead. The Wild Things scored four times to make the score 7-4.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Hector Roa and Reydel Medina pushed Washington ahead 5-4 before Kyle Pollock lifted a two-run home run to left for the 7-4 lead and the game's final score.
Luc Rennie got the Opening Night start for Evansville and took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs in five innings on five hits with eight strikeouts. Kyano Cummings took the loss for the Otters, surrendering four earned runs on three hits in the eighth.
Frank Trimarco earned the victory for Washington in relief, pitching 3 2/3 innings while giving up just one earned run on two hits. Chase Cunningham also took a no-decision in the start for Washington, allowing three runs, three hits and six walks.
Offensively, Thomas went 2 for 5 with a run scored and Vilorio finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
James Harris went 2 for 5 for Washington with a run and RBI, and Kyle Pollock picked up two RBI off the home run.
The Opening Weekend series between the Otters and the Wild Things continues Saturday at 6:35 p.m. from Bosse Field. On Saturday, the Otters will partner with Vanderburgh County Commissioners for Bicentennial Night at the Otters, celebrating Vanderburgh County's 200th anniversary. Fans can stay in their seats to enjoy a firework display following Saturday's game. Saturday is also Girl Scout Night as pre-registered girl scouts will get to camp out in the outfield at Bosse Field after the game.
