OHL Erie Otters

Otters Defeats Rangers

November 6, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

After a comeback effort that saw the Otters score 5 unanswered goals against the Mississauga Steelheads the night before, Erie ended up doing the same to the visiting Kitchener Rangers, winning 7-3.

Just 49 seconds into the game, OHL leading scorer Taylor Raddysh dropped the gloves with the Ranger's Dylan Seitz after an incident in Kitchener's defensive zone. Raddysh would receive a total of 17 minutes in penalties from his encounter with Seitz. His physical play sparked the Otters' offense, however, as Mitchell Byrne scored his first goal of the season from the point moments later. The lead would not stand for long: Kitchener, surging with momentum from several powerplay opportunities, capitalized on an Otters turnover when Darby Llewellyn nabbed the errant pass from the corner, swiveled to the slot, and scored point-blank in front of the Erie net. Though the two teams would engage in some chippy extracurricular activity behind the scenes, the score remained tied 1-1 heading into the second period.

Kitchener took the 2-1 lead early in the second: Elijah Roberts, pinching to keep the puck in the Erie zone, floated a shot on Otters goaltender Troy Timpano. The puck found its way through traffic and bounced past Timpano to give Kitchener the one goal advantage. The OHL's deadliest offense wouldn't be denied, however; Erie's Taylor Raddysh chipped in a rebound in front of Rangers goalie Dawson Carty to tie the game at 2. Raddysh's linemates, Kyle Maksimovich and Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat, acquired assists on the play. The Rangers scored shortly thereafter during an extended bout in the Erie defensive zone: Timpano managed to make the first save, sprawled to block the rebound, but was unable to get across the crease for the third shot. Elijah Roberts was credited with the Kitchener goal, his second of the game.

The Otters regained momentum after a power play early in the third period. Alex DeBrincat, the OHL's leading goal scorer, hammered a rebound home on the backdoor of the Kitchener net to tie the game 3-3. Then, minutes later, Taylor Raddysh muscled the puck through a Rangers defenseman and in on net. Carty stopped Raddysh's shot, but DeBrincat followed up and crammed in the rebound to give Erie the 4-3 lead. This began a glut of Otters goals: Kyle Maksimovich scored on a feed from DeBrincat on the powerplay; Darren Raddysh notched his fourth of the year to give Erie the 6-3 advantage; and Taylor Raddysh scored his second of the game to make it 7-4. The three goals were scored in under two minutes. Kitchener was unable to muster an appropriate response, and Erie scored 7 against their opponent for the second time in as many nights.

For Erie, Alex DeBrincat scored two goals and three assists; Taylor Raddysh had two goals and two assists; and Kyle Maksimovich had one goal and three assists. Troy Timpano made 19 saves on 22 shots and moved to 11 wins on the season; he has not been defeated in the Otters net yet. For Kitchener, Elijah Roberts scored two goals, and Dawson Carty saved 35 of the 42 shots he faced in the loss. The Otters stay in the Erie Insurance Arena to face the Owen Sound Attack on Tuesday, November 8, before playing their next five games on the road.
