Erie, Pa. - A third period rally fell short for the Erie Otters as they could not get past the No. 1-ranked London Knights at Tullio Arena Saturday night, losing 4-3.
The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period after goals by Brett Welychka, Olli Maataa and Chris Tierney.
Greg McKegg put the Otters on the board seven minutes and 13 seconds into the second as he blasted a slap shot from the high slot for his fourth goal of the season during an Erie power play.
Vladislav Namestnikov boosted the London lead back to three after pumping home a one-timer for his 10th goal of the season with less than six minutes to go in the second.
The Otters attempted a comeback in the third period, started by their captain McKegg. He burst into the London zone during a power play and powered around Olli Maataa towards the net. He lost control of the puck, but it went off the skate of Jarred Tinordi and into the goal for McKegg's second of the game two minutes and 50 seconds into the third.
Connor Brown improved his point-scoring streak to six games as the rookie jammed home a rebound from a Kris Grant shot for his sixth goal of the season six minutes and eight seconds into the third.
The Otters had other chances to tie the score, with the best opportunity coming on a McKegg breakaway. He was stoned by Michael Houser with the left pad and denied of a hat trick.
The Otters are back at home Friday night at 7:00 p.m. against the Windsor Spitfires.
