Erie Otters News Release

After defeating Western Conference powerhouse and rival London the night before, the Otters returned to Erie on Saturday to face the nineteenth placed Guelph Storm. OHL leading scorer Alex DeBrincat rejoined the Otters after missing the game against London with an illness, but goaltender Troy Timpano was scratched with an illness of his own; Joe Murdaca started for the Otters in his stead. Dylan Strome became the Otters' all-time leading scorer in the game, scoring three points as Erie defeated Guelph 9-1.

The Otters jumped out to an early lead when DeBrincat rifled a shot over Guelph goaltender Anthony Popovich; DeBrincat's tally came at just 1:26 into the first period. Dylan Strome's assist on the play brought him within one point of Brad Boyes' record for all-time points in an Otters uniform (309). Popovich denied several Erie scoring chances after DeBrincat's goal, but eventually the Otters broke through again: this time, Gera Poddubnyi corralled the puck after it bounced off a Storm defenseman, then sent a wristshot through the goaltender for the 2-0 Erie lead. The two goal lead would stand through the remaining minutes of the first, as the Otters headed into the second period outshooting their opponents 17-11.

Erie scored two quick goals just thirteen seconds apart to open the second period: Strome connected a pass to DeBrincat, who passed to Taylor Raddysh, who sniped the shot past Popovich to score; and Jordan Sambrook hopped into the play on the very next shift to score a goal of his own, making it 5-0 for the Otters. Strome tied Brad Boyes as the Otters' all-time leading scorer with 309 points; just minutes later, Strome passed Boyes after scoring on the breakaway; his 310 points is the most scored by a player in Otters history. The rest of the period was a rout in the Otters' favor: Anthony Cirelli scored his first in an Otters uniform; then, Jordan Sambrook scored another goal to close out Erie's six-goal second period.

Guelph's Barret Kirwin ended Joe Murdaca's shutout bid at 7:44 of the third period, putting the Storm on the board for the first time, but Owen Headrick scored another goal for the Otters minutes later, making it 9-1 just before the game ended.

For the Otters, Jordan Sambrook scored two goals and two assists; Alex DeBrincat scored a goal and three assists; Taylor Raddysh scored two goals and an assist; Dylan Strome scored a goal and two assists, becoming the Otters' all-time leading scorer; and Joe Murdaca made 25 saves on 26 shots in the victory.

Barret Kirwin scored Guelph's only goal, and Anthony Popovich made 28 saves on 37 shots in the loss.

The Otters head on the road, facing the Peterborough Petes on Thursday, February 2. The Otters will look to extend their winning streak to six.
