Ottawa Voyageurs News Release
(OTTAWA) - After nine days of spring training and an exhibition game win against the Quebec Capitales, the Ottawa Rapidz is pleased to announce its final 22-man roster.
Rapidz Manager Ed Nottle claimed outfielder, Pete Pirman off waivers from Sioux City, making him the 22nd player under contract with the team. The 28-year old native of Palatine, IL, was picked in the 42nd round of the 1999 draft by the Detroit Tigers out of Eastern Illinois University. Pirman has played the last six seasons in independent baseball leagues, in Evansville, Richmond, Kalamazoo, and Sioux City. His career-year happened in 2005, when he led the Frontier League in Total Bases (238), RBI (100), Games (96), and At-Bats (409). That same year, he finished second in Stolen Bases (35), Runs (82), and Hits (142), fourth in Home Runs (23), fifth in Extra-Base Hits (47), and sixth in Average (.347). "Pete is a talented outfielder, with good offensive skills," said Nottle. "I know him well and I know he will be a good fit for this ball club, not only because of his skills as a ball player, but also because of his personality." The 6', 180-pound LS-4 bats and throws right.
Non-roster invitees, Ottawa's Mark Charrette, Greg Dumouchel and Rudy Vallejos were not offered a contract. "All three men demonstrated tremendous work ethic and I'm actively trying to place them somewhere for this summer," said Nottle.
The 2008 Ottawa Rapidz will display a great mix of young players and veterans. "I feel very comfortable starting the season with this group of players," said Nottle. "I think our fans will enjoy watching them play and getting to know them on the field and in the community; and we'll make a run for a spot in the playoffs. I'm constantly trying to improve my ball club-my players know that and so should our fans."
