Ottawa Lynx News and Notes:
Road Trip Wrap Up: The Lynx return home after a 4-4 road trip that saw Ottawa lose the first three games and then rally to win four of their last five. In the last five games, the Lynx pitching staff gave up a combined total of eight runs.
Pitching In: Last night RHP Rick Bauer and two Lynx relievers combined on a two-hit shutout. The Lynx pitching staff has been terrific of late, posting 3.36 ERA as a staff for the month of June, which is 2nd best in the International League. Opponents have hit only .221 against Lynx pitching this month. The Lynx bullpen continues to be terrific for manager Dave Trembley's club, as they have posted a combined 2.25 ERA over their last 28 games (23 earned runs in 92 innings). Particularly effective has been RHP Andy Mitchell, who has not given up an earned run in his last 11 outings, which spans 18.2 innings pitched.
Bernie's Blazing: Lynx leadoff man Bernie Castro has been the catalyst for the Lynx offense this year. Castro was 1-for-4 last night, extending his hitting streak to 12 games, over which time he has hit .354 (17-for-48). For the year, Castro's .324 batting average is 8th best in the IL, and his 78 hits are second best in the league.
Walter's Warming: After hitting .205 with one homer in 25 games in May, Lynx 1B Walter Young has had a terrific start to June. The slugging Lynx 1B has hit .347 with 5 HR and 15 RBI in his first 11 games in June, upping his season totals to 8 homers and a team-leading 42 RBI.
Roster Roundup: Since the Lynx were last in Ottawa, the roster has made a few changes. OF Ramon Nivar rejoins the Lynx tomorrow after spending 11 days with the Orioles, where he hit .308 in seven games. RHP Jacobo Sequea will not be with the Lynx, as he was designated for assignment by Baltimore on June 8th and was claimed by the Washington Nationals. OF Bobby Darula rejoined the Lynx roster this week, and to make room for Darula OF Eugene Kingsale was transferred to Double-A Bowie.
Visiting Braves: There are some familiar faces on the Braves roster. Braves manager Pat Kelly managed the Lynx for two years (1997-98), while INF Carlos Mendez played for the Lynx in 2003 and 2004. The Braves also have one Canadian on their roster, as RHP Chris Mears (born in Ottawa, raised in British Columbia) will be in Richmond's bullpen.
