Missoula PaddleHeads News Release
MISSOULA, MONT - With its second double-header in as many days, the Missoula Osprey (6-3) split a pair with the Helena Brewers (6-4) Monday from Kindrick Legion Field. The Osprey defeated the Brewers 10-2 in game one, while the Brewers used three, fifth inning runs to capture a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.
The games first runs came in the top of the third, when Helena scored two runs off RBI base hits from Jean Carmona and David Fry. During the bottom of the inning, the game was delayed for 30 minutes due to rain.
With the bases loaded after the delay, the Osprey scored their first run on a sacrifice fly from Zack Shannon, and tied the game when Zack Jones put a ball in play the second baseman could not handle. Cesar Garcia roped a double down the left field line to score two and give the Osprey a 4-2 lead. David Sanchez flowed him with a two-run double of his own to cap off the six-run inning.
The Osprey tagged on a run in the fourth on a wild pitch while adding on a run in the fifth as well with a Joe Robbins RBI double. Missoula added two more insurance runs in the sixth with another Sanchez two-RBI double to give the Osprey a 10-2 lead that Justin Garcia protected on the mound with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Wilfry Cruz (2-0) earned the win with five innings of two-run baseball. Victor Castaneda (0-2) was tagged with the loss after two and two third innings where he allowed four runs.
Game two saw offense provided in the top of the first inning as Jesus Marriaga, Eddie Hernandez, and Buddy Kennedy all hit singles to give the Osprey a 1-0 lead. However, Helena combated with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an RBI groundout off the bat of David Fry. Neither team could tag on a run until the fifth, when the Brewers struck for three runs.
With two outs and nobody on base, Carmona worked a walk on a full count against Matt Ladrech (0-1) while Chad McClanahan singled to put two men on. Nick Egnatuk sent a two-RBI double to left-center field to provide the Brewers with a 3-1 lead. Fry bounced a ball up the middle to score Egnatuk to push the lead to 4- 1. Helena's Chad Whitmer pitched the final two innings for his first save of the season as Blake Lillis (1-0) tossed five innings of one-run ball for the victory.
The Osprey return to action Tuesday against the Helena Brewers at 7:05 pm. The Selway Armory Pregame Show begins at 6:45 p.m. on ESPN 102.9 and the MiLB First Pitch App.
