Oshawa Generals News Release

Tonight, your Oshawa Generals battled hard against the Plymouth Whalers and once again, proved that anything can happen in a hockey game. What looked like a game that was going to be lost to the Whalers turned out to mark the Generals fourth consecutive win. Shots on goal tonight were 33-17 for the Generals and this was another stellar third period comeback game for the Generals.

The first period went by in a flash thanks to fast-paced play from both teams. The first penalties came from Chatham for interference and Harding for holding to make it a four on four. Shortly after, Cassels was sent to the box on a hooking call . Dal Colle had a great shot but it was protected by a glove save from Whalers goalie, Alex Nedeljkovic. Chris Carlisle followed up with another great shot, which hit the post. Another penalty was awarded to Stephen Desrocher for high sticking. Wrapping the period up, at 1:16, Smith and Yetman were both sent to the penalty box on unsportsmanlike conduct calls.

The second period started with a four on four. Yetman came off his penalty and straight onto the ice. Shortly after getting back on the ice, he scored a goal assisted by Whalers captain, Alex Peters. The goal came only 51 seconds into the period. Peters would later serve a penalty for holding, quickly followed up by a high sticking penalty for Hunter Smith. Around the seven minute mark, more penalties were awarded, this time Liam Dunda took his turn in the box for tripping. There was a lot of Generals action in front of the Plymouth net with Nedeljkovic even lost his stick in the fumble, however the Generals couldn't put the puck in the net. Nearing the end of the period, Tobias Lindberg was sent to the penalty box for interference and it was Hunter Smith who scored the first goal for the Generals, ending the period at 1-1.

The third period featured some big hits along with lots of pushing and shoving. Chatham of the Whalers opened the scoring early in the period, giving the Whalers a 2-1 advantage. Later in the period, Smith laid out a huge hit, it was Cassels and Jones who dropped the gloves. Jones, the league leader in penalty minutes, and Generals top scorer, Cole Cassels both ended up in the penalty box with five minutes each for fighting, ultimately heightening the tension on the ice. With 9:23 remaining in the third, Chris Carlisle was sent to the penalty box on an interference call, putting the Whalers again on a power play. Gianluca Cur put up the third goal for the Whalers, giving them a 3-1 lead over the Generals. With the Whalers once again on a power play as a result of a Generals unsportsmanlike conduct call, Lindberg seized an opportunity to score a shorthanded goal and was successful, narrowing the Plymouth lead to 3-2.

With the score at 3-2, Whalers centre, Francesco Vilardi took two minutes in the penalty box on a hooking call. With only 6:07 remaining in the third, and the Generals on a power play, Hunter Smith scored his second goal of the night to tie things up three apiece. With intensity at its peak, it would be Michael Dal Colle who scored the fourth Generals goal of the night, giving the Gens their first lead of the night with only minutes remaining in the third period. In an attempt to even the score, the Whalers pulled their goalie and the Generals secured the win with an open net goal again from Michael Dal Colle.

What a game... The Generals battled hard and are consistently proving that they are a force that cannot be reckoned with. Final score of tonight's game was 5-3 for the Generals in yet another comeback win for the Eastern Conference leaders. Tonight's first star went to Hunter Smith who scored two goals, second star was awarded to Whalers goaltender, Alex Nedeljkovic, and third star was given to Mitchell Vande Sompel who made an amazing defensive effort for the Generals tonight.

The action continues this Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 13 when the Generals face the Ottawa 67's at 2:05 p.m. at the General Motors Centre.
