Ornelas Homers, Leads Offense in Tuesday Defeat

FRISCO, Texas - The Frisco RoughRiders fell in the series opener to the Midland RockHounds at Riders Field Tuesday night in an 8-3 loss. Frisco shortstop Jonathan Ornelas highlighted the offensive effort with his eighth home run of the season in a 2-for-4 night, doubling in a run and scoring twice in the loss.

Second baseman Justin Foscue finished 2-for-5 at the plate for Frisco and drove in his 32nd RBI of the season. Foscue's multi-hit night on Tuesday ranks as his fourth in his last five games in July to raise his monthly batting average to a .375 in six games.

Frisco starter Cody Bradford (6-6) tossed 3.1 innings in his second start of July, giving up six runs on seven hits and striking out four. Righty reliever Tai Tiedemann struck out two batters in his 1.1 scoreless frames for Frisco.

Riders pitcher Justin Slaten logged his first appearance on the Frisco roster since June 19th Tuesday night with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief. Righty Fer Ozuna tossed the final three outs in the ninth.

Midland's Colin Peluse (8-2) tossed six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits to power the RockHounds. Reliever Charles Hall struck out six batters in three innings to turn away the Riders in the final frames Tuesday night.

Frisco hopped out to an early lead as Ornelas slugged his eighth home run of the season on the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning, giving the Riders a 1-0 advantage.

The RockHounds answered with four unearned runs, beginning with two in the top of the second on a two-run home run from catcher Kyle McCann to take a 2-1 lead. Midland added two more in the third inning, beginning with a solo blast from right fielder Chase Calabuig and followed by an RBI double from first baseman Jordan Diaz.

The RoughRiders pushed back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut into Midland's three-run lead, starting with a leadoff walk from third baseman Jax Biggers. Ornelas picked up his second run-scoring hit with an RBI double to right field, scoring Biggers from first.

Right fielder Kellen Strahm picked up the second hit of the inning, extending his on-base streak to 27 games, tying the mark for sixth-longest in franchise history.

Foscue followed the base hit from Strahm with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to plate Ornelas from second, trimming the RockHounds' lead to 4-3.

Midland extended their lead with another three-run inning in the top of the fourth on a pair of RBI singles from first baseman William Simoneit and center fielder Marty Bechina to lead Frisco, 6-3.

The RockHounds plated two late runs in the latter innings at Riders Field as McCann singled in a run in the seventh for his third hit of the night, giving Midland a 7-3 lead. McCann crossed home as the final run of Tuesday's game in the top of the ninth, advancing to score on a wild pitch from Ozuna to give Midland an 8-3 lead.

The six-game series continues Wednesday night at Riders Field with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch, as Frisco RHP O (2-0, 1.62 ERA) makes his fourth appearance with the Riders against Midland LHP Hogan Harris (1-0, 1.10 ERA).
