Victoria HabourCats News Release
VICTORIA, B.C.-- Just over one week before the club's home opener on June 7, the Victoria HarbourCats have largely finalized their roster for the upcoming West Coast League season, announcing the signings of two new players.
IF TOMMY JEW, UC Santa Barbara, (Freshman), San Ramon, CA, 6/175
IF DOMENIC COLACCHIO, Long Beach State, (Freshman), Aliso Viejo, CA, 5-10/190
Tommy Jew is a highly skilled infielder from UC Santa Barbara (NCAA Div. 1; Big West) who will join Gaucho teammate Matt Lautz (RHP/OF) in Victoria this summer. Jew enjoyed an illustrious high school career at Dougherty Valley HS, the same school as 2016 HarbourCats outfielder Cody Snider. In his senior year, Jew hit .467 with 18 RBIs in 24 games, being named Diablo Foothill Athletic League MVP, First Team All-League, and Third Team All-State. He also holds several career records at Dougherty and was a two-sport athlete playing baseball and football, and was a four-time honor roll student.
Domenic Colacchio is another highly touted young infielder at Long Beach State (NCAA Div. 1; Big West). This spring in his freshman season, Colacchio is hitting .256 with five RBIs in 21 games, totaling 39 at-bats. He was recruited from Aliso Viejo High School, where he was a four-year varsity baseball player and played in all but two games during his final three seasons. As a junior, he was named First Team All-South Coast League and Second Team All-County, hitting .368 with 29 RBIs.
The club has also signed two more players to 10-day contracts for the beginning of the season.
C HAYDEN JACO, Vernon College, (Freshman), Coquitlam, BC, 6-1/190
C TYSON ABBOTT, Prairie Baseball Academy, (Freshman), Victoria, BC 6-2/180
The HarbourCats also announced that left-handed pitcher Matt Mosca (Mesa CC/Dixie State) is unable to join the team this summer due to innings pitched, and C Chayce Ka'aua (Hawaii) has been released.
GET A HIT OFF THE OWNERS (JUNE 5)
The HarbourCats are throwing a 'welcome back' event for fans at Royal Athletic Park (1014 Caledonia Ave) on Sunday, May 29. Beginning at 3pm until 5pm, fans are invited to come out to the ballpark to 'take a swing' at members of the team's ownership and front office.
Individuals including John Wilson, CEO of Wilson's Transportation and HarbourCats owner, as well as team Managing Partner Jim Swanson, General Manager Brad Norris-Jones and Assistant General Manager Brittany French will throw batting practice to fans. If a fan gets a hit, the team will donate HarbourCats tickets to charity.
Tickets and merchandise will be available for purchase at the event.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST AT THE BALLPARK (JUNE 7)
Opening Day is going to be nearly an all day event, beginning with a pancake breakfast at Royal Athletic Park from 7:30am - 9:00am on Tuesday, June 7. Fans will enter through the main ticket gates of RAP on Caledonia Ave.
This is a unique opportunity to get to know your team as HarbourCats players and coaches will attend the breakfast to socialize with fans, and to give interviews to media who are invited to attend.
All donations made at the event will go to National Little League in Victoria.
By attending the pancake breakfast, you will have a golden opportunity to purchase your tickets for Opening Night and beat the lines at the gates that evening before the 6:35pm first pitch against the Wenatchee Apple Sox.
Opening Night will be a can't-miss event with the Drive For 5,000 and Whiteout. With all the festivities planned and the large crowd anticipated, ballpark gates will open at 4:00pm, two-and-a-half hours before the 6:35 first pitch. Concessions will be open at 4:00pm, and a live band will provide entertainment leading up to the baseball game.
The first 5,000 fans to pass through the gates will receive several giveaways including a $10 gift card from Golf Town, a free Wilson's Transportation water bottle, and a white t-shirt courtesy of Castle Home Builders and Floyd's Diner.
Krazy George, the legendary Krazy George of BC Lions fame will bring his talents to RAP and lead the massive crowd in fun, cheers and activities.
EXHIBITION GAMES THIS WEEK AT RAP
The 2016 HarbourCats take the field for the first time this week in a pair of exhibition games at Royal Athletic Park.
On Tuesday, the HarbourCats play the Victoria Eagles alumni, likely giving current HarbourCats pitcher and 2015 Eagles alum Ethan Ekuija an opportunity to pitch against many of his former teammates.
Wednesday will see the HarbourCats take on a Victoria Selects team made up of many former professional players from Victoria as well as some of the top up-and-coming amateur players from the area. Former professional player, Victoria Seal and former HarbourCats coach Charlie Strandlund is the coach of the Selects team.
Admission for each game is $7. All tickets are general admission.
This is a great opportunity to come back to the ballpark and get a preview of both the 2016 team, and get a sneak peek at the exciting renovations and upgrades that have taken place at RAP for the 2016 season!
SEASON TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE
HarbourCats season tickets are continuing to sell quickly and sales of 10-packs and single-game tickets are progressing at a brisk rate. Fans are encouraged to secure your seats as soon as possible as selection continues to become increasingly limited as the season approaches.
