
Ontario's Martens Named Sherwood Hockey ECHL Player Of The Week

PRINCETON, N.J. -Andrew Martens of the Ontario Reign is the Sher-wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for March 15-21.
The 28 year old defenseman had eight points (2g-6a) in four games to help Ontario go 2-1-1 for the week. Martens recorded his first four-point game of his career and his second three-assist game of the season in Ontario's 6-5 shootout loss to Idaho on March 21. He had at least one point in all four games for the week and had a plus-minus rating of +4.
Martens has a five-game point streak (2g-7a) that started when he recorded one assist during the Reign's 4-3 win at Alaska on March 13. He sits third on Ontario with 29 assists and sixth in points with 33 (4g-29a). His 17 power-play assists rank second among the team and he is currently tied for 13th among ECHL defensemen in points.
In his fifth season in the ECHL, the Friendswood, Texas native has tallied 133 points (26g-107a) and 241 penalty minutes in 261 regular-season games and registered seven points (3g-4a) and 10 penalty minutes in 17 Kelly Cup Playoff games with Greenville, Johnstown and Ontario.
Martens appeared in 27 American Hockey League games with Manitoba and Toronto in 2008-09 amassing 11 points (1g-10a) and 12 penalty minutes while also appearing in two playoff games for Toronto.
He played three seasons at Bemidji State University from 2003-2006 registering 40 points (11g-29a) and 67 penalty minutes in 101 games.
On behalf of Andrew Martens, a case of pucks will be donated to an Ontario youth hockey organization by Sher-wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-wood Hockey has donated more than 23,100 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
