The Ontario Fury is Driven by Mark Christopher Chevrolet
Welcome to CITIZENS BUSINESS BANK ARENA for this afternoon's MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE game between the visiting Las Vegas Legends and the ONTARIO FURY. The two teams are battling for one of the three playoff spots in the Pacific Division. Today is also Kids Take Over Citizens Business Bank Arena, with youths shadowing the Fury's staff during the game.
ABOUT THE FURY LAST GAME: Beat Turlock, 10-6, Saturday night NEXT GAME: at Turlock Express, Jan. 30, 2015. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. and is the first of a two-game Northern California trip for the Fury.
LAST GAME ROUNDUP: The Fury scored four times in the third period to turn a 4-3 halftime lead into an 8-5 advantage after three quarters, as they defeated the Express 10-6. Newly acquired Johnny Topete and Jamar Beasley each scored three goals in their Fury debuts.
OFF SUSPENSION: The Fury will have the services of two players who had been serving suspensions for today's game. Miguel Sanchez was suspended two games for a red card he was issued against Las Vegas on Jan. 3. And Corey Maret, who the Fury acquired from Seattle, sat out last night's game due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
WELCOME ADDITIONS: Jamar Beasley and Johnny Topete sure found a way to endure themselves to the home crowd Saturday night, each earning hat tricks in their Fury debut. For Beasley, it was his second debut involving the Fury this season, as he played his first game for Seattle against Ontario on Dec. 18. In that game, he scored twice for the Impact in the Fury's 11-9 win. Topete, meanwhile, had only appeared in three games for San Diego this season, registering one shot on goal and no points for the Sockers.
CAPTAIN FURIOUS: Tiguinho continues piling up the point this season, as he scored two goals and had three assists in Saturday's victory. He even had his captain's armband pulled off while scoring a third-quarter goal. He now has 41 points on the season - 24 goals and 17 assists.
TIGGY NOT ALONE: The Fury now have three players among the top 20 scorers in the league. Luis Piffer's assist last night pushed him into a tie for second on the team in points with 23 (nine goals, 14 assists) with Bernie Lilavois (seven goals, 16 assists). The duo are tied for 18th in the league standings with three other players.
FIRST HELPER: Goalkeeper Alexis Apodaca picked up his first point of the season, assisting on Tiguinho's second goal of the night.
FURY, YMCA TEAM FOR YOUTH PROGRAMS
The Ontario Fury and Scheu Family YMCA of Upland have partnered up to offer a series of programs to youth in the area. Fury players and staff will coach the Fury Training Academy, which will be Wednesdays starting Feb. 18. The Ladies of Ontario Fury will present youth cheer and hip hop dance classes at the center - Tuesdays for hip hop and Thursdays for cheer instruction. The Fury are also sponsoring the Winter Club Soccer League at the YMCA, which will allow teams to play games indoors during the colder winter months. Information about all the programs is available on the Fury's website at: www.OntarioFury.com/ymca-camps
ABOUT THE LEGENDS LAST GAME: Defeated Sacramento, 18-4, Jan. 16 NEXT GAME: at Tacoma Stars, 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25. The first of a home-and-home series against the Stars.
LAST GAME RECAP: Las Vegas scored the first nine goals of the game, and cruised from there, as they kept pace in the Pacific Division playoff race.
THIS SEASON VS. ONTARIO: The Legends and Fury have split their two previous games this season, with each team winning on the road. Ontario came from behind Dec. 2 as Joey Pacheco scored the game-winner late in the fourth quarter of a 8-7 Fury victory. On Jan. 3, the Legends turned the tables, coming back from an early Fury lead to defeat Ontario 11-8 in a game that featured 46 penalty minutes, four yellow cards and one red card.
SCORING LEADER: Las Vegas has its own player in the league's top 10 in scoring. Forward Ivan Campos is ninth in the league in points, having tallied 15 goals and 18 assists (33 points) in 13 games. This season against Ontario, he's scored two goals and has three assists.
NOT HERE: Las Vegas midfielder Ivan Simental (seven goals, five assists in 12 games) did not make the trip to Ontario this weekend. The Legends also released indoor veteran Bronil Koochoie on Friday. The midfielder had no points in seven games for the Legends. And Majell Aterado, the first signing in Fury history, was placed on season-ending injured reserve last weekend. He appeared in one game with the Legends this season, without scoring a point.
AROUND THE MASL The Baltimore Blast became the third team this season to secure a playoff berth, defeating Detroit Waza Flo 9-6 Saturday night in a single-point scoring system game played at Detroit. The Blast have a magic number of 3 to clinch the Eastern Division outright, holding a 61=8E2-game lead over its nearest competitor. One consolation for Detroit in the loss: Their six goals is the most the Blast have allowed in a game this season. ... Syracuse took full advantage of the multi-point scoring system used in the Eastern Division on Friday night. The Silver Knights were credited with two three-point goals as they defeated the Rochester Lancers 12-11. Had it been a single-point scoring game, they would have headed to overtime tied at 5. ... Along with Baltimore, the Missouri Comets remain undefeated on the season, but Missouri has yet to clinch a playoff spot in the Central Division. The Comets will get tested next weekend, as they will travel south of the border to play Saltillo on Friday and then at one-loss Monterrey on Jan. 25. ... San Diego, which has played two games less than Ontario going into today's action, will catch up next weekend as they will play three games in three days. The Sockers will head to Northern California for a game Friday night at Turlock, then they will travel to Sacramento for two games against the Surge: Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. San Diego's bigger test will come Feb. 7, when they host the Baltimore Blast at Valley View Casino Center.
