Cleveland Monsters News Release
Three first-period goals allowed by the Lake Erie Monsters (33-28-3-7) were all the Texas Stars (30-35-2-2) needed Saturday night in Cedar Park, Texas, as the Stars blanked the Monsters 4-0. The loss ends the Monsters string of 14 straight one-goal games, and it also saw the professional debut of a pair of Colorado Avalanche prospects: defenseman Duncan Siemens, and goaltender Calvin Pickard.
The Stars struck first when Mike Hedden wrapped a puck around the Monsters net and fired it along the ice, into the goal, at 6:51 of the first period.
Texas added two more in the final 1:47 of the first period; Matt Fraser fired home a one-timer from the right circle on an Austin Smith feed, and Luke Gazdic connected on a wrist shot from the left wing to give the Stars a 3-0 lead after the first period. The Monsters would keep their deficit at 3-0 until early in the third period.
Fraser scored his second of the game and 33rd of the season on a wrist shot from the right circle at 1:02 of the third period; a goal that marked the end of the evening for Monsters starter Cedrick Desjardins.
Pickard relieved Desjardins, and the 2010 second-round draft choice of the Colorado Avalanche stopped eight of eight shots in his first game as a pro. Also making his professional debut for the Monsters: defenseman Siemens, the 11th overall draft choice, and second choice by the Avalanche after Gabriel Landeskog, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Desjardins is 13-10-5 after stopping 25 of 29 shots in the loss. Jack Campbell, the 11th overall choice in the 2010 draft by the Dallas Stars, stopped 30 shots in his first career shutout. He is 3-2-0 for Texas.
The Monsters and Stars finish the season series, and the Monsters finish the regular season road schedule, Sunday at 6:00 PM. Listen live to all the action on ESPN 850 WKNR.
