Omaha Beef News Release
Omaha, NE - There will be a lot of orange and black in the crowd this weekend as the Omaha Beef professional indoor football team completes a two-game homestand by hosting the Wichita Wild Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
Omaha won their fifth game in-a-row last Saturday evening as they defeated the Colorado Ice 38-23 to move their record to 6-2 on the season. The BEEF scored 21 straight points on four straight possessions overlapping the first and second quarters on the way to the win. The 6-2 mark is tied for the second-best start after eight games, joining the 2003 and 2004 seasons and is only behind the team's 8-0 start in 2001.
In the game against the Ice, James McNear had 239 yards of total offense (62 rushing and 177 passing) and three total touchdowns (one rushing, two passing) to lead the offense. The defense provided a solid effort as they tallied three tackles for loss and an interception, recovered a fumble, broke up four passes and also blocked a kick. On special teams, Ricky Lebeda contributed seven points and David Horne had two returns (a missed field goal for 40 yards and a kickoff for 22 yards) that both started BEEF scoring drives.
McNear said the Wild have good personnel and the BEEF look to improve on the last time the two teams played, which was on April 10th in Wichita as Omaha won 31-24.
"They do have athletes on their team," McNear said. "We feel that we did not play up to our potential the first time around and we hope to make the adjustments needed to ensure a good game on Saturday."
Wichita is coming off a 55-13 loss at the hands of the Billings Outlaws last Saturday in Billings. Wichita is 1-6 in their first season in United Indoor Football.
Offense/Special Teams Coordinator Tommie Williams says while Wichita is only 1-6, Head Coach Carl Caldwell and his staff has fielded a very competitive team.
"Wichita is a better team than their record shows," Williams said. "We still have to execute our offense and defense and play as if Wichita is undefeated. We have to continue to improve every week regardless of who our opponent is."
The game will be "Ladies Night" at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. As a result, the BEEF will give carnations to the first 1,000 women that pass through the gates.
Fans are encouraged to join the BEEF at their pre-game meal at Texas Roadhouse, 520 N. 155th Plaza (156th and Dodge), beginning at 2:30 p.m. BEEF players, coaches and staff will be in attendance. Also prior to the game, the BEEF Boardwalk will be set up complete with clowns, face painting and inflatable games provided by Bobo's Bouncy Town.
The Omaha Beef opened their 2008 home season versus the Bloomington Extreme on March 15, 2008. All home games will be played at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
