Olson's Arm, Ogans's Two Homers Help Power Spikes' 6-5 Win over Crosscutters

July 10, 2022 - Major League Baseball Draft League (MLBDL)
State College Spikes News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Mason Olson fanned a season-high seven batters over five one-hit innings to extend his scoreless streak to 13 frames, and Keshawn Ogans smashed his way to the State College Spikes' first multi-homer game of the season as the Spikes outlasted the Williamsport Crosscutters for a 6-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.

Olson (2-0) yielded only a single to the Crosscutters' (18-14) Matthew Etzel to start his outing and a walk to Tayden Hall in the fourth. The left-hander, who is slated to continue his collegiate career at BYU, needed just 65 pitches to go five innings and lowered his ERA to an MLB Draft League-best 0.33 over a league-leading 27 innings this season.

Olson has not allowed a run since June 19 and is one of only two MLB Draft League pitchers, along with Carter Bosch at Frederick, to record two starts of five innings or more this season.

The Spikes (14-18) built a 6-0 lead through 5 Â1/2 innings with plenty of firepower. Ogans launched a two-run homer 415 feet to left field off Kyler Patterson in the fourth inning, then followed with a leadoff solo shot to the State College bullpen in left field off Brandon Laux in the sixth.

The shortstop from Cal added to his home run total in the MLB Draft League season, though his first homer, a leadoff shot that started the June 14 game at West Virginia, was wiped out by the suspension of that contest in the fourth inning.

Kevin Karstetter helped the Spikes start the game strong with his second homer of the season, a solo shot to the State College bullpen in the second off Williamsport starter Easton Sikorski (0-1).

Williamsport rallied to score four runs in the sixth to draw within 6-4, then plated another run in the eighth on an error. However, Austin Cheeley (1) bounced back from allowing an infield hit to pinch-hitter Travis Holt and hitting pinch-hitter Isaac Nunez with a pitch in the ninth to close it out. Cheeley struck out Matthew Etzel, retired Josue Urdaneta after knocking down a comebacker, and, after an intentional walk to Hall, elicited a flyout to right from Daniel Harris IV to end the game.

With the win, the Spikes knocked the Crosscutters into a tie for first place with West Virginia in the MLB Draft League standings with six games remaining in the season's first half. The team leading the standings at the conclusion of the first half of the season on July 16 will earn a berth in the inaugural MLB Draft League Championship Game on Tuesday, September 6, and is assured of hosting the game.

Monday, the Spikes start a four-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with the opener of a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The 6:35 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Jared Kengott (0-1) on the hill for State College, while Mahoning Valley will send right-hander Jacob Harsany (1-0) to the mound.
