Norfolk Tides News Release

July 31, 2007 - Garrett Olson allowed just two hits in eight shutout innings, pitching the Tides to a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Lynx Tuesday night from Harbor Park.

Olson (9-6) allowed just two third inning singles in eight innings of work, walking two and striking out seven. The 23-year-old southpaw increased his league-leading strikeout total to 117, and lowered his ERA to 2.95, 2nd-best in the IL.

Olson has now won his last six decisions with Norfolk, allowing just seven earned runs in 54.0 innings (1.17 ERA) over his last eight outings in a Tides' uniform. Over that stretch, he has yielded just 28 hits while striking out 59 and walking 16.

After three scoreless innings to start the contest, Norfolk jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to an opposite field solo home run off the bat of Mike Cervenak. The Tides added two more runs an inning later, as Tike Redman tripled home a run and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Bo Hart.

Cervenak finished the night 2-for-4, and he is second in the league with 121 base hits this season.

Fabio Castro (4-4) suffered the loss for the Lynx, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work.

With the win, Norfolk finished the month of July 16-10, and pulled within 4.5 games of the IL Wild Card lead. The Tides are now 54-55, the closest they've been to the .500 mark since they were 3-4 on April 14.

The Tides will look to reach the .500 mark on Wednesday night as they continue their 10-game homestand. Norfolk welcomes the Louisville Bats to town for a three-game set, with right-hander Jim Johnson (5-9, 3.76) slated to take the hill for the Tides against Louisville righty Johnny Cueto (1-0, 3.60). First pitch is set for 7:15.
