State College Spikes News Release

NILES, Ohio - Mason Olson scattered three hits over a season-long five innings to headline a quartet of State College Spikes pitchers who kept the Mahoning Valley Scrappers fireworks under wraps on the Fourth of July in a 5-0 win at Eastwood Field.

Olson (1-0), a left-hander out of the College of Southern Idaho who is committed to continue his collegiate career at BYU, has now posted a 0.41 ERA over 22 innings in six MLB Draft League starts for the best mark in the loop. The Spanish Fork, Utah native tossed a season-high 72 pitches and struck out four Mahoning Valley (13-15) batters to earn the win on Monday night.

Josh Mollerus followed Olson on the mound and allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one batter over two innings. Christian Wall and Tyler Hoffman then logged a hitless inning each, with Wall striking out one batter and Hoffman two, to finish effort.

Timely hitting keyed the Spikes' (11-16) offensive effort. Kevin Karstetter put State College on top in the fifth inning after delivering a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded.

In the ninth, State College added a trio of runs. Jordan Williams led off with a single, then advanced on two wild pitches before scoring on a Scrappers error. Lukas Cook then followed in Karstetter's footsteps with another two-out, two-run single to finalize the score.

Williams reached base four times on the night with two hits, a walk, and a time hit by pitch. The left fielder also stole a base.

Mahoning Valley right-hander Duncan Davitt struck out nine batters over four innings in a starting role before giving way to reliever Karter Fitzpatrick (0-1), who took the loss after yielding two runs on four hits and two walks over two innings.

Tuesday, the Spikes and Scrappers meet for the middle game of their three-game set at Eastwood Field. Right-hander Jared Kengott (0-1) gets the ball for State College in the 7:05 p.m. matchup, while Mahoning Valley will turn to right-hander Devin Crawford (1-1).

The Spikes return home on Saturday, July 9 for the first NFT Classic. In a partnership that forges a new connection between baseball and the non-fungible token (NFT) space, the State College Spikes and Williamsport Crosscutters will each rebrand the game.
