Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Tied at 3 in the bottom the seventh inning with a runner on third base, WhiteWings manager Eddie Dennis called for a suicide squeeze from Alexis Oliveras to try and bring home the winning run. The call worked. The bunt from Oliveras went over the head of pitcher Garrett Granitz for a base hit as the WhiteWings walked off winners, taking game two from the Thunder, 4-3.
Oliveras had been in an 0-10 slump before coming to the plate but his game-winning RBI gave the WhiteWings (44-31) the victory.
Granitz (1-1, 2.46 ERA) takes the loss for the Thunder (31-45) while Julio Santana (4-4, 4.78 ERA) gets the win.
Trailing 3-0 in the third inning, the WhiteWings scored three unanswered runs over the next two innings to tie the game at 3. An error from Antoine Gray allowed the first Wings run to score. Two batters later, Wilmer Pino batted home another run to draw the WhiteWings to within one. The next inning, Gabriel Ortiz hit home the tying run with an RBI single into right field.
Both teams were held off of the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh when Oliveras delivered his game-winning RBI. Ortiz led off the inning with a double and was then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Decker. That's when Dennis called for the suicide squeeze that brought home Ortiz.
The WhiteWings take on the McAllen Thunder on Sunday night at 7:05 PM on Valley Morning Star Family Day. David Cross (2-5, 8.78 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the WhiteWings.
