Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - It was Fireworks Friday at the ballpark, and Rex Rundgren provided the spark for the Edmonton Capitals.
The shortstop's RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning proved the difference as the Caps came back from a three-run deficit to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 8-7 on Friday night and send the more than 4,000 fans in attendance home happy.
The Capitals trailed 7-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but left fielder Brent Metheny hit a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, to right field to bring Edmonton within one run. The score stayed at 7-6 until the bottom of the ninth, when catcher J.D. Closser cashed in one run with a bases-loaded double to tie the game.
After Yuma intentionally walked third baseman Enrique Cruz to load the bases once again, Rundgren took an 0-2 pitch from Scorpions reliever Chris Thompson and drove it up the middle to score the winning run. It was Rundgren's fourth RBI on the night as he went 3-for-5 at the plate.
Metheny went 3-for-4 on the night with two RBI, while first baseman Lou Santangelo collected the Caps' other RBI. Starting pitcher Lou Pote gave up five runs on nine hits over five innings while racking up six strikeouts and issuing four walks, and reliever Tom Boleska was credited with the victory.
Shortstop Arnoldo Ponce and right-fielder Juan Camacho led the way for the Scorpions with two RBI each. Catcher Jonathan Jaspe also chipped in, going 3-for-4 and crossing the plate twice.
Yuma player-manager Jose Canseco was not in the lineup, or the city, for Friday's game, as he was stranded in Sacramento, California, with several teammates after their flight was cancelled. He arrived in Edmonton late Friday night and will join the Scorpions when the series resumes on Saturday.
Saturday's 7 p.m. game is another edition of Saturday Night Movies presented by Herbers Autobody Repair and 96.3 Capital FM. With Canseco in town, Saturday's feature will be the classic Simpsons episode "Homer at the Bat," to which Canseco lends his voice. Plus, four more Simpsons episodes will be shown as part of the rescheduled marathon. Fans are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and chow down on some free popcorn while they enjoy the movie.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
