Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals came up with one of their most dominating offensive displays of the season as they cruised to an 18 - 2 victory over the visiting Yuma Scorpions Saturday night. The Caps crushed out 18 hits including a grand slam from relief pitcher J.J. Whetsel in the bottom of the 8th inning. That's a three game winning streak for the Caps who made up some ground in the race for first place in the North American Baseball League's North Division. The Calgary Vipers slipped up with a 6 - 5 loss at home to the Chico Outlaws. Edmonton's now 1.5 games behind their provincial arch-nemesis.
Most of the damage for Yuma came in the middle innings when Edmonton exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning capped off by a three-run home run from Carlos Duncan. The Dominican Republic native had a superb night at the dish going 3 for 5 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. The hottest bat of the night belonged to second basemen Enrique Cruz who racked up five singles in a 5 for 6 outing including three runs scored.
Scorpions playing manager and former Major League all-star Jose Canseco did make an appearance putting himself into the game in the 8th inning as a relief pitcher. He gave up 4 hits and 4 earned runs in his inning of work and drew a walk in his only plate appearance.
That's the fourteenth time the Caps have put double-digits on the board for offence and it's the second highest run total of the season just coming up shy of their 20 run performance June 15th versus Chico.
After the game, fans were treated to another Saturday Night Movie presented by Herbers Autobody & Repair and Capital FM. A Simpson's marathon entertained fans out in centerfield lead off by the classic episode guest-starring Jose Canseco.
The series resumes with a doubleheader on Sunday. It's the third annual Bark In The Park where fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game. Tickets are just $15 and that includes a $10 human ticket and a $5 dog ticket with the $5 dollars going directly to the Edmonton Humane Society. It also happens to be a Dental Choice Family Pack Sunday presented by 630 CHED. Family packs include 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs and 4 Pepsi for just $52. The pair of 7-inning games will start at 2 p.m.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
