Bakersfield Blitz News Release
BAKERSFIELD - Bakersfield Blitz OL/DL Jerry Turner will be a guest on the weekly broadcast of "The Coach's Corner" on Friday, July 7 at 9:30 a.m. "The Coach's Corner" is a new segment on The KRAB Radio Morning Show with Meathead, Desi, and Rocky Nash, Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m.
As part of the number one defense in the af2, Jerry Turner has recorded 12 sacks this season, ranking him third in the league. "They brought me in to do my job and it's my job to bring relentless pressure," Turner said.
After four years at Tennessee Tech. University, Turner returned to his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama to play for the af2 Birmingham Steeldogs for the 2001 season. In the middle of the 2002 season with Birmingham, Turner tore his ACL and LCL in his left knee and was out for the remainder of the year. However, an injury couldn't keep Turner from playing. He returned back to football the following year to play for the AFL Las Vegas Gladiators in 2003. After one year in Las Vegas, Turner was home again playing for the Birmingham Steeldogs in 2004. During his 2004 season with the Steeldogs, Turner broke the All Time Sack Record with 22 sacks and was ranked number 9 as the All Time Sack Leader in the af2. In 2005, Turner played for the NIFL Odessa Roughnecks.
Turner has twice received the af2's weekly honor of the US Army Ironman of the Week this season.
However, don't be fooled by Turner's sack record. Behind the Blitz helmet is a tender-hearted daddy. Turner has a daughter, Lailah Alexis, who is almost a year old. Lailah lives with her mother in Tookeville, Tennessee, where Turner went to college. "I think of her everyday," Turner said. "I like to think that I am a good, God-fearing man; just using the talent God gave me."
Fun fact about Jerry Turner: he attended high school with American Idol star, Ruben Studdard and was his roommate for a brief period when Turner attended Alabama A&M.
The 2006 Bakersfield Blitz Football Camp will be held July 17 - July 20 from 8:00 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the Silver Creek Center, 8515 Akers Rd. Bakersfield Blitz coaches and players will teach boys and girls (ages 8-14 years old) football skills, such as passing, catching, kicking, and blocking. The registration fee is $60 and includes a general admissions ticket for the Blitz game on Saturday, July 22 at Rabobank Arena. Parents can register their children at City of Bakersfield Recreation and Parks or visit www.bakersfieldcity.us.
Turner and the rest of the Blitz team will continue their run for a championship when they take the field against the Everett Hawks on Saturday, July 8. Kick off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Washington. This will be the second time the Blitz and Hawks have met this season. In their first meeting, the Blitz brought home a 60-54 victory on March 30. The Blitz are currently ranked third in the National West Division, while the Hawks remain in last place.
Great seats are still available for Blitz home games. For more information, call 377-BLITZ or visit www.bakersfieldblitz.com.
