Oklahoma City Comets News Release
LAST GAME: Oklahoma took a 2-0 lead on a Kevin Richardson home run in the third inning, but gave up five unanswered runs in a 5-2 loss to Iowa. Felix Pie's ninth home run of the season gave the I-Cubs the lead in the sixth. Jason Stanford moved to 3-0 with the win, while Brian Gordon dropped to 4-5. Nelson Cruz had one hit in four at bats in his return to the RedHawks lineup.
CITY COMES BACK NEXT YEAR: The Redhawks front office management announced earlier today that the franchise will add City into the team's moniker starting in 2009. The Oklahoma City RedHawks will feature new logos and uniforms with a change in the color scheme. The logo and uniforms will be unveiled on September 15 during the Bricktown Showdown Gala.
MAGIC NUMBER NEWS:
Oklahoma's magic number is at three after a loss by New Orleans last night in Albuquerque. Any combination of RedHawk wins and New Orleans losses that add up to three will clinch the American South Division, which could happen as early as Saturday.
GET'EM WHILE THEY LAST:
RedHawk playoff tickets went on sale last night at the ballpark and earlier today on the internet at www.oklahomaredhawks.com. Oklahoma would host game three on September 5 at 7:05 pm, and games four and five over the weekend if necessary. Saturday's game would also start at 7:05 pm, while the Sunday's tilt would begin at 2:05 pm.
ACTIVE AND READY TO GO:
Kazuo Fukumori and Max Ramirez will be activated from the disabled list prior to tonight's game. Fukumori is slated to make a spot start tonight after spending the last ten days on the disabled list with an ankle injury. Ramirez played two innings in his Triple-A debut on August 30 before getting injured.
NEAR NEW HOME RUN KING:
Nelson Cruz became the RedHawks all-time, single season home run leader on July 19 with a three home run game. Cruz passed Steve Balboni's total during the 1993 season for second-most in Oklahoma's Triple-A history with his 37th home run in the seventh inning on July 27; the final home run in his 11 home run in ten games binge and last before getting placed on the disabled list on August 2. Dave Roberts holds first place on the all-time list with 38 home runs during the 1965 season.
THIRD PLACE:
Nelson Cruz remains five runs batted in shy of tying Nate Gold's RedHawks record 103 RBI set last season. Cruz's 98 RBIs are tied for ninth all-time in Oklahoma City's Triple-A history, matching Keith Moreland's 1978 total. Jason Botts drove in 102 in 2005, the second-most total in RedHawks history.
IOWA AT A GLANCE:
Iowa's magic number dropped to four with last night's win. The Cubs did not game a second game due to Memphis' win at Omaha... Bobby Scales extended his hitting streak to nine games with a pair of hits on Thursday. Scales has hits safely in 15 of his last 16 games, and is batting .367 this month.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Elizardo Ramirez was transferred to Bakersfield's roster prior to last night's game to clear a spot for Nelson Cruz. Ramirez is still slated to start Saturday's game against Iowa... Brian Gordon was placed on the disabled list earlier today... A corresponding roster move will need to be made to clear room for Max Ramirez... Ryan Roberts went 0-4 last night and saw his 16 game on-base streak snapped...
