LAST GAME: Memphis hits three home runs to account for four of its five scores in a 5-4 win over Oklahoma. Elizardo Ramirez took the loss for the RedHawks, which held leads of 1-0 and 3-2, but could not overcome the deficit as the game wound down. The RedHawks went 2-15 with runners in scoring position and had the tying run on base in each of the last three innings. Travis Metcalf drove in two runs for Oklahoma, while Nelson Cruz and Jason Ellison had two hits apiece.
CRUZ CRUSHING: Nelson Cruz is now one home run shy of tying for tenth place on Oklahoma's all-time Triple-A home run list. Cruz tagged his 27th last night in the RedHawks loss, and is one off Scott Sheldon's 1999 total of 28. Dave Roberts hit 38 in 1965 and sits atop the list.
HONORED: Brian Gordon will take the mound tonight for the first time since being named PCL Pitcher of the Week. Gordon was honored for his work from July 7 through July 13. The Round Rock native pitched 11.2 innings of scoreless ball spanning two spot starts, allowing seven hits while striking out 11. Gordon was the second RedHawk pitcher to earn the Pitcher of the Week honor this season, joining Dustin Nippert, who earned the distinction in June following his no-hitter.
BALLARD UP: Texas promoted left-hander Michael Ballard to the RedHawks roster yesterday. Ballard was drafted out of the University of Virginia in 2006 and had pitched for Spokane, Clinton, and Bakersfield prior to the 2008 season. The southpaw began this season with Frisco, going 8-3 for the RoughRiders. Ballard held a 4.02 ERA, including one start when he allowed ten earned runs. He also made one relief appearance for Frisco.
TEAGARDEN TO TEXAS: The Rangers purchased Taylor Teagarden's contract prior to their game in Minnesota last night, where the former RedHawk made his Major League debut. Last Sunday, Teagarden played in the Futures Game at Yankee Stadium. On Wednesday, he was selected for Team USA to compete in this summer's Olympic Games, and capped his week by playing in his first game in the big leagues. The University of Texas product started behind the plate and went 0-3 in the Rangers 3-0 loss.
LOE DOWN: Kameron Loe was optioned to the RedHawks Friday as Texas made a series of moves to clear room for Taylor Teagarden and Hank Blalock, who was activated from the disabled list. Loe made one appearance in his most recent stint with Texas, his third of the season. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits over two innings pitched in the Rangers July 12 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Overall this season, Loe has a 4.35 earned run average over five games for Texas. The Rangers also designated former RedHawk Joselo Diaz for assignment.
MEMPHIS AT A GLANCE:
Four Memphis relievers combine to shut down Oklahoma over the last four innings last night, allowing three hits while striking out five... The Redbirds staff ERA is 3.72 against the RedHawks this season... Josh Phelps and Rico Washington each extended their hitting streaks last night, now at five and seven games, respectively.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Bobby Jones is taking his Rangers-mandated vacation this weekend. Coach Hector Ortiz will manage the team over the course of the weekend until Jones returns on Monday...
