Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Paul McAnulty hit a three-run homer and the Portland Beavers got solo blasts from Brett Dowdy and Peter Ciofrone as they beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 6-4 for their fifth straight victory before a crowd of 8,991 Saturday night at PGE Park.

The large crowd was treated to a special post-game fireworks show as part of the Beavers' Cricket Wireless Triple-A All-Star celebration; the countdown continues to the 2009 game that will be played at PGE Park on July 15, 2009.

Ciofrone, who also drew two walks and scored twice, extended his hitting streak to 16 games, Dowdy tallied two hits and Will Venable, who has hit safely in 16 of his last 17, was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored for the Beavers (52-46), who improved to 7-2 against the Sky Sox (47-53) this season.

Enrique Gonzalez, filling the rotation void left when Clay Hensley was recalled on Friday, turned in four scoreless innings in his first spot start since July 1. Wil Ledezma (1-0) worked two innings of relief for the win, while Carlos Guevara rounded out the game with two scoreless innings for his second save.

Portland got to Sky Sox starter Sean Smith early, eventually sending him to his third loss in a row. The Beavers cruised to a 6-0 lead on the strength of the three homers - back-to-back solo shots by Dowdy and Ciofrone on the first two pitches from Smith in the first, and a three-run clout from McAnulty in the bottom of the third. Vincent Sinisi's sac fly that scored Venable from third capped the Beavers' three-run first.

The Sky Sox got a solo homer from Christian Colonel in the fifth and cut their deficit to 6-4 with an RBI single from Eduardo Cornejo and a two-run double by Cory Sullivan in the seventh.

Smith (3-3) finished his six innings of work with six runs allowed on six hits and three walks.

The Beavers play host to the Sky Sox again Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
