Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - Ten Tulsa Oilers players gathered at St. Francis Children's Hospital today and spent several hours visiting with kids and their families.
The Oilers stopped in on patients on three different floors and handed out autographed mini-sticks as well as stuffed animals. The players, decked out in their jerseys, posed for pictures with kids from ages 3-16 and did their best to lift the spirits of the children, many of whom had been hospitalized for an extended period of time.
"It's always a neat thing for us to be able to come here and spend some quality time with these kids," said Oilers defenseman, Gio Flamminio. "You can tell it means a lot to them, but it definitely means more to us. Seeing those smiles has really made an impact on me and I'm just glad we could provide a momentary distraction from the sickness some of these kids are fighting."
Today, the Oilers gave back with their time, but on Saturday, the organization will partner with Turn Tulsa Pink to raise thousands of dollars for cancer charities across northeast Oklahoma. The fifth annual "Pink In The Rink Night" begins Saturday at 7:35 p.m. at the BOK Center as the Oilers host the Wichita Thunder. The Oilers players will wear special pink jerseys which will be auctioned off after the game. Proceeds from the jersey auction and ticket sales will be donated to Turn Tulsa Pink which assists ten different organizations that provide care to cancer patients of all ages and genders.
"This pink theme has really started to catch on with teams all over minor pro hockey so I'm looking forward to being a part of it on Saturday night," said Ben Gordon, Oilers center and leading scorer. "After seeing some of these brave kids today, you get a better idea of what exactly they're going through, and it makes you realize how important it is to continue raising money and doing our part however we can."
Tulsa recorded a 4-3 shootout victory over the Denver Cutthroats on Tuesday night at the BOK Center and returns to action on Friday for a 7:35 p.m. face-off against the Missouri Mavericks. "Pink In The Rink Night," sponsored by TD Williamson, will be the Oilers eighth meeting of the season with the rival Thunder.
