Tulsa Oilers News Release

TULSA, OK - The Tulsa Oilers allowed five goals in third period and surrendered 39 shots on goal in a 7-5 loss to the Missouri Mavericks on Tuesday night in front of 2,869 at the BOK Center.

After dueling the Mavericks to a 2-2 draw through two periods, the final frame started on a positive note for the Oilers. At the 2:43 mark of the third, Troy Ofukany deflected in a shot from new defenseman Jeff Buvinow to put Tulsa back in front. Just 32 seconds later, Sebastien Thinel responded for the Mavericks when his centering feed went off of Oilers defenseman Gio Flamminio and past goaltender Mike Garman. Thinel finished the evening with a goal and three assists to earn first star honors. Brandon Smith gave the Mavs a 4-3 lead at 5:03 and Kenton Miller continued the Missouri onslaught at 8:01 when he chipped in the third unanswered goal by the visitors.

Trailing 5-3, the Oilers were able to pull within a goal when Ryan Menei sent a no-look pass through the crease that was buried by Ben Gordon at 15:12. But the Mavericks offense simply wouldn't be slowed down. Dave Pszenczny's powerplay tally with less than two minutes remaining gave Missouri another two-goal cushion. The Oilers kept fighting and managed to cut the deficit in half just 12 seconds later thanks to a tap-in goal from Mike Ullrich, his second marker of the night.

In the game's final minute with the Oilers net empty, Mavs forward Podge Turnbull rang a wrist shot off the crossbar and kept the Oilers alive. Tulsa forwards Ryan Menei and Gary Steffes each fired pucks off posts in the closing seconds before Blake Forsyth sealed the win for Missouri with an empty net goal.

Seven goals is the second highest total by any Oilers opponent this season. Tulsa allowed eight goals in the second game of the season, an 8-2 setback in Wichita. The loss is the Oilers tenth straight game in which they've given up three goals or more.

The Oilers return to the ice on Friday night in Wichita for the third meeting of the season against the Thunder. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
