Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Brandon, MB - Led by a surging power play and big efforts from Curtis Lazar, Henrik Samuelsson and Stephane Legault the Oil Kings tallied a 5-1 win over the Wheat Kings in Brandon Tuesday night. With the win the Oil Kings have now pushed their winning streak to 18 games in a row and have a 3-0 lead in their best of seven Eastern Conference Semi Final.

Edmonton fell behind early on and were unable to get a consistent attack going after three straight penalties. It was Brandon defenseman Ryan Pulock who took a pass and beat Oil Kings goaltender Laurent Brossoit. The power play goal was the Wheaties first of the series as the Edmonton penalty kill has still allowed only two power play goals in the WHL Playoffs.

Five minutes into the second and power forward Travis Ewanyk tallied his second of the post season. The Oilers draft pick was able to slam home a bouncing puck from close range off some great work by Jordan Peddle. The Oil poured it on as Lazar was on the end of a great play by Legault and the returning Samuelsson. Samuelsson left the game briefly after taking a questionable hit to start the second but led the rush on his first shift back leading to the go ahead goal. Edmonton would take a 2-1 lead into the third period after out shooting the Wheaties 19-2.

The Oil Kings took advantage of an early power play carried over from the end of the second. Mark Pysyk's shot snuck through Brandon goaltender Corbin Boes and TJ Foster was able touch it home for his first of the playoffs. Another power play six minutes into the period would result in a goal for Mitch Moroz who picked the far side corner to make it a 4-1 game. Legault would add a late goal to make it a 5-1 final. Brossoit finished with 25 saves to record the win. The Oil Kings power play ignited to go 2 for 5 on the night.
