Oil Kings Snap Winless Skid With Big Win

Red Deer, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings are hanging around the top 5 in the league when it comes to their record on the road and they used that confidence wearing the white jerseys to snap a 5 game winless skid with a 3 - 1 win in Red Deer. Oil Kings leading scorer Brett Breitkreuz scored a greasy game winner early in the third period as Edmonton picked up their 6th win of the season away from Rexall Place.
The Oil Kings actually had 2 of the first 3 powerplays in the game but it was Red Deer that struck first with the man advantage. Cass Mappin sniped one past Torrie Jung 5:58 into the first period. Red Deer leading scorer Landon Ferraro was the set up man picking up his 27th point of the year to give the home team the edge.
Edmonton had the edge on the shot clock in the early going but Red Deer managed to catch up with a couple more powerplays in the late stages of the period to finish the period outshooting the Oil Kings 13 - 12.
The Oil Kings evened things up with about 7 minutes to go in the second period. There was a face off to the right of Rebels goalie Darcy Kuemper. Brent Raedeke was facing off against Landon Ferarro in the face-off circle but the puck took a funny bounce when the linesman dropped the puck. Nobody really won or lost the draw and Jeff Lee took the opportunity to sneak in and swat the loose puck in for his 9th goal of the year.
Torrie Jung made sure the game stayed tied 1 - 1 through 40 minutes with a terrific save in tight off Adam Kambeitz. The Coaldale, Alberta native knocked a puck out of the air on the backhand while he was drifting through the crease. Shots on goal after two periods were 28 - 21 in favor of the Rebels.
Edmonton took their first lead of the game just 93 seconds into the third period. The Oil Kings top line of Brett Breitkreuz, Brenden Dowd, and Craig McCallum were reunited after a bit of line juggling the last couple of games and all three decided to drive to the net with a purpose. McCallum got the first shot away and then Breitkreuz battled hard for the rebound and was able to stuff it in as he was being hauled down in the crease. Breitkreuz 12th of the season made it 2 - 1.
Craig McCallum fought off a check and fired home an empty netter to make the final score 3 - 1. That snaps a 5 game pointless streak for McCallum.
Edmonton's overall record improves to 10-14-1-3 while the Rebels record slips to 8-15-0-5. Next up for the Oil Kings will be the Prince Albert Raiders back home at Rexall Place on Saturday night. It's free mini stick night. The first 2500 fans will get a free mini stick. Also, former Prince Albert Raider and Red Deer Rebel Steve McIntyre who now occupies the Edmonton Oilers enforcer role will be on hand for an autograph session before the game. Don't be late.
