Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Saint John, NB - The Edmonton Oil Kings saw their season come to an end on Friday night as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Hamilton Bulldogs in their final game of the round-robin at the 2022 Memorial Cup.

The Bulldogs raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to a couple of power play goals. First, Avery Hayes was able to stuff a puck home at the side of the Edmonton net at the 9:09 mark of the first period. Ryan Winterton extended the lead with just over three minutes left in period after he finished off a nice passing play on another Bulldogs man-advantage.

The Oil Kings fired 16 pucks the way of Hamilton netminder Marco Costantini in the open 20 minutes but could not solve him.

In the second period, the Oil Kings fired 15 more shots at the Hamilton cage but again, Costantini had the answer for every Edmonton attack to preserve the Bulldogs 2-0 cushion into the third period.

Jalen Luypen breathed life into the Oil Kings just over two minutes into the third period as he sniped a shorthanded goal from the left-circle after he was went into the attacking zone on a pass from Jaxsen Wiebe.

The Bulldogs though were able to get that goal back later in the third after Mason McTavish scored on a one-timer from the left circle.

Jake Neighbours brought Edmonton back to within a goal in the final three minutes but that was as close as they would come after McTavish scored an empty-net goal in the final seconds to ice it.

Sebastian Cossa finished the night making 32 saves for the Oil Kings, Costantini made 40 saves for the Bulldogs. Edmonton went 0-for-2 on the power play, Hamilton was 2-for-3.

The Oil Kings would like to thank all of their fans and partners for an incredible 2021-22 Season and look forward to welcoming everyone back to Rogers Place for the 2022-23 Season in September!
