Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a one-goal decision to the Seattle Thunderbirds in Game 5 of the WHL Championship Series on Saturday night at Rogers Place.

Josh Williams continued to have the hot hand for the Oil Kings as he scored the game's opening goal 6:25 into the first period. Just as an Edmonton power play expired, Carson Golder did a good job to keep the puck in at the Seattle blueline by finding Jakub Demek in the right-wing corner with a pass who then flipped a perfect backhanded feed to the backdoor that Williams redirected over the shoulder of T-Birds netminder Thomas Milic, for his fourth goal of the playoffs and third in the last two games.

The Thunderbirds outshot the Oil Kings 10-7 in the first period, but Edmonton maintained the one-goal advantage entering the intermission.

In the second period, the Thunderbirds were able to tie the score just over two minutes into the middle stanza as Conner Roulette was able to track a bouncing puck in the slot and rip a low shot past Sebastian Cossa.

The Thunderbirds would then take the lead at the 8:51 mark after Matthew Rempe cashed in on a Seattle power play after he ripped a shot through a screen from the slot.

The Oil Kings put nine shots the way of Milic in the second period but were unable to solve him for a second time as they took the one-goal deficit into the second intermission.

The third period saw the Thunderbirds have another quick strike as at 2:21 of the period Lucas Ciona cleaned up a rebound in front of the Edmonton net to stake Seattle to a 3-1 advantage.

The Oil Kings were able to draw back to within a goal at the 9:14 mark of the period after Golder drove to the net and deflected a Simon Kubicek shot from the right-circle past Milic.

In the final moments the Oil Kings pressed for an equalizer but could not solve Milic again.

Cossa finished the night making 31 saves, while Milic turned away 28 for the Thunderbirds. Edmonton went 0-for-6 on the power play, Seattle was 1-for-5.

Next up, the Oil Kings and Thunderbirds square off in Game 6 on Monday night at Rogers Place with puck drop set for 7:30 PM in ICE District.
