Offense Sputters; Hounds Lose Two

Midland RockHounds News Release

Thursday night's game between the RockHounds and San Antonio was suspended due to major thunder storm, tied at 2-2 through five innings. Friday, when the clubs returned to finish their business, the 'Hounds went from thunder-and-lightning to Rolaids-and-Maalox.

In the eighth inning of the completion of the suspended game, the RockHounds had two runners thrown out at home plate attempting to break the 2-2 tie. In the ninth, they had a pair of hits against the league's top closer, Kevin Quackenbush (who owns a 0.30 ERA), putting runners and first and third with one out. With the winning run 90 feet away, Quackenbush got a strikeout and a ground out, forcing extra innings. The Missions then scored four runs on just two hits (plus two walks and a wild pitch) in the 10th to win, 6-2 (pass the Rolaids).

In the regularly scheduled game, the 'Hounds had two runners on base three times in the first five innings, but none would "touch the dish." The Missions' outstanding bullpen then took over, with three relievers combining to allow one hit over the last three-and-a-third innings.

San Antonio scored three runs in the fourth, with Yeison Asencio ripping a two-run triple then scoring the third run. Of the three runs, just one was earned (pass the Maalox).

Kibbles & Bits

- Zach Neal was outstanding, albeit in a losing effort, in Friday's regularly scheduled game. The right-hander went eight full innings (a season high for a RockHounds starter), allowing three runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts, with only one of the runs earned.

- The 'Hounds out-hit the Missions, 20-12, including 14-7 in the suspended game, but stranded 17 runners in the two games.

- The Missions have won 5-of-7 games at Citibank Ballpark in 2013, while the clubs have split eight games at San Antonio.

- The RockHounds wrap up their current home stand hosting the San Antonio Missions for A.J. Griffin Bobble-head Doll Night, with first pitch Saturday night at 7. A.J. was a member of the 2012 RockHounds (and briefly in 2011) and is now one of the top young pitchers in the American League.

- The 'Hounds then travel to Frisco for a four-game set wit the RoughRiders (beginning Sunday).
