Gateway Grizzlies News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Grizzlies' bats fell quiet on Friday night at CONSOL Energy Park as Wild Things' righty Ernesto Zaragoza (6-6) dazzled through seven scoreless innings in Washington's 3-1 win.
The Grizzlies (32-49) collected just two hits in the contest while having their three-game win streak snapped.
Rookie right-hander Dakota Smith (2-2) ran into trouble in the second inning after escaping a jam in the first. Jimmy Yezzo led off the frame with a double which was followed by a walk to Daniel Poma. Smith then allowed a two-RBI double to Washington's Austin Wobrock, which gave the Wild Things a 2-0 advantage.
The score remained 2-0 until the sixth, when LHP Kyle Bouman replaced Smith. Poma led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Matt Ford's sac fly.
With the score 3-0 in the eighth, the Wild Things (36-46) turned to lefty Scott Messner. He allowed a walk to Madison Beaird and then an RBI single to rookie Ryan Johns. The base hit put the Grizzlies on the board and made it 3-1.
After RHP Collin Shaw pitched a scoreless bottom half of the eighth, Wild Things' closer Jon Kountis recorded his ninth save of the year when he retired the Grizzlies in order during the ninth inning.
Grant Buckner was the only other Grizzlies' hitter to collect a hit in the game.
Gateway and Washington will continue their three-game series on Saturday evening with a 6:05 CT first pitch. The Grizzlies send RHP Vince Molesky (3-6, 6.35 ERA) to the mound. The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital channels and 1400 AM KJFF. Sam Levitt will call the action.
