Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - Three Birmingham (1-0) pitchers combined to hold the Biscuits (0-1) to two hits, making a second inning run enough to hold up as the Biscuits dropped their fourth straight Opening Night game by a final of 1-0.

Pitching was the story as both staffs fanned 12 batters and allowed a total of five hits. The 12 strikeouts of Biscuits hitters equalled the most in a single game from all of last season, and the two hits were the fewest since 2009. The best offensive chance for the Biscuits game in the third when Cody Cipriano doubled to start the frame and moved to third with one out. Birmingham starter Dylan Axelrod (1-0) was able to get a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning.

Axelrod went five innings, striking out eight and walking only one to pick up the win. Nathan Jones and Greg Infante (1) each tossed two innings of hitless relief to keep the narrow lead.

Matt Moore (0-1) was just as good in his Biscuits debut, fanning seven batters in five full innings of work while walking none. The trouble came in the second when he hit two batters and gave up a two-out RBI-single to Ozzie Lewis that would prove to be the difference. Marquis Fleming continued the stalwart pitching for the Biscuits, pitching a perfect two innings while striking out four. Neil Schenk and Matt Bush also tossed scoreless frames.

RHP Chris Archer will take the ball for the Biscuits on Friday night against a rehabbing Jake Peavy. Peavy was the 2007 Cy Young Award Winner after acheiving the pitching triple crown with the Padres, and is now rehabbing an injury to his lat muscle. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the first 3,000 fans through the gates receiving a David Price Bobblehead Doll from Alfa Insurance.
