Generals Fall Short On Opening Night

PEARL, MISS. (April 7, 2011) - The Jackson Generals (0-1) dropped their opener of the 2011 season in Pearl, MS, against the Mississippi Braves (1-0) on Thursday night, 9-6. The Generals rallied for three runs in the eighth and ninth innings in the loss. The teams combined for 23 hits on opening night in front of a crowd of 4, 782 at Trustmark Park.

Nate Tenbrink, Johermyn Chavez and Carlos Triunfel recorded two-hit nights for the Generals. Rich Poythress reached base four times and was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jesus Sucre led all M-Braves hitters, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. Generals' Johan Limonta and M-Braves' Ernesto Mejia and Donell Linares registered homers.

Randall Delgado was brilliant for the M-Braves tossing five innings of scoreless baseball, earning his first win of the season. The #3 prospect for the Atlanta Braves fanned six, while scattering three hits. Generals' starter, Anthony Vasquez dealt 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) and suffered the loss. Vasquez walked two and struck out three in the opening night start.

The Braves opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Ernesto Mejia reached on a single and then came around to score on a throwing error by Generals' second baseman Kyle Seager. The Braves took the lead 1-0.

Ernesto Mejia opened the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer against Vasquez. Marcus Lemon and Antoan Richardson followed with RBI's, capping off a three-run fourth for the M-Braves. Mississippi jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.

After Mississippi scored two in the fourth, the Generals narrowed the gap in the top of the eighth inning. Johan Limonta smacked a two-run homer to center and Nate Tenbrink added an RBI triple. The Generals cut the deficit to 6-3 after the top of the eighth inning.

The M-Btaves answered right back with a three-run homer from Donnell Linares against Generals' reliever Moises Hernandez in the bottom of the eighth. The Braves pushed the lead back to six, at 9-3.

Once again the Generals rallied as Rich Poythress doubled off the center field wall scoring Kyle Seager in the top of the ninth. Johermyn Chavez followed with a one out single that scored two to cut the Braves lead to 9-6. That was as close as the Generals would get, falling 9-6.

The Generals send RHP Steven Hensley to the mound against Braves LHP Brett Oberholtzer Friday night at Trustmark Park, with first pitch set for 7:05.
