Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS - A game that looked like a blowout early turned into a tight one down the stretch, but the Mississippi Braves (1-0) held on, defeating the Jackson Generals 9-6 on opening night in front of 4,782 fans at Trustmark Park.

The two teams combined for 23 hits and three home runs on the night while sending a combined nine different pitchers into the contest.

21-year-old RHP Randall Delgado (1-0) picked up the win for Mississippi, throwing five innings of scoreless baseball, giving up just three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Mississippi started the scoring early when Ernesto Mejia scored on a throwing error by Generals 2B Kyle Seager that would have completed an inning-ending double play. The Braves then tacked on three more runs to make it 4-0 in the fourth, in part thanks to a solo home run by Mejia. Later in the inning, catcher Jesus Sucre and second baseman Jordan Kreke each reached on singles and came around to score. Two more runs in the sixth inning gave the Braves a comfortable 6-0 lead headed to the 7th.

The Generals wouldn't go away quietly, though. They cut the lead to 6-3 in the 8th, thanks to a two-run home run by DH Johan Limonta, and an RBI triple by 3B Nate Tenbrink two batters later, scoring 1B Rich Poythress.

The Braves then got some insurance runs on a three-run home run from third baseman Donell Linares to extend the Mississippi lead to 9-3.

Jackson would threaten again in the top of the ninth, scoring three more to make it 9-6, but it wasn't enough.

Anthony Vasquez (0-1) took the loss for the Generals after pitching 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits for three earned runs.

The Generals and Braves meet again on Friday for game two of a five game series. First pitch from Trustmark Park is at 7:05 PM CDT. LHP Brett Oberholtzer will take the mound for the Braves, while the Generals will counter with RHP Steven Hensley.
