Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - Scoreless over their previous 30 innings, the Lowell Spinners offense broke through for a pair of fourth inning runs and added two run innings in the seventh and eighth as the trio of Justin Haley, Francisco Taveras and Greg Larson kept the Vermont Lake Monsters off the board in a convincing win Wednesday night at LeLacheur Park, 6-0.

Lowell (34-35) finally broke their run drought in the bottom of the fourth inning when Aneury Tavarez led off the inning with a double to deep center. After moving to third on a groundout, Tavarez came around to score on an opposite field triple by Mookie Betts to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead. They would tack on a second run on a sacrifice fly from Dreily Guerrero and were firmly in the driver's seat from there.

Vermont (28-41) was hitless through the first four innings, but they picked up their first hit in the fifth inning on a line drive double to center by Miguel Marte, following two warning track flies to leadoff the inning. Marte got a bit overzealous however when Matty Johnson dove for the ball in center and was picked off after a wide turn at second.

The Spinners added to their lead in the seventh as Matt Gedman led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when Oscar Perez singled, bringing home Gedman on an error by catcher Bruce Maxwell. Perez would advance to second on the throw and come around to score on an RBI single by Matt Marquis, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Lowell would add to it again in the eighth, scoring runs on RBI singles by Gedman and Perez, for a 6-0 lead that would hold as the final.

The pitching staff was once again phenomenal, holding the Lake Monsters to just three hits. Haley started, going three hitless innings, walking two and striking out four. Taveras (6-2, 1.97) picked up the win with five innings of one-hit baseball, striking out four. Greg Larson closed out the win with a scoreless ninth, allowing a pair of hits and striking out one.

Every member of the Spinner line-up reached base, led by Gedman who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, snapping a 0-for-27 stream. Tavarez and Perez added two hit nights, while Betts moved into sole possession of the team lead in RBI with 30 on the season.

Following the game Marquis and Guerrero were promoted to Greenville, while Johnson was promoted back to Hi-A Salem. With the conclusion of the Gulf Coast League season, the Spinners will receive an influx of players from Fort Myers to finish out the season.

The Spinners wrap up the home portion of the 2012 season Thursday night at LeLacheur Park for Latino Night sponsored by metroPCS, complete with an appearance from New England Revolution star Diego Fagundez and post-game fireworks! Mike Augliera (0-3, 5.29) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch, with Tyler Wilson (5-0, 4.43) following as he attempts to set the Spinners all-time win record, aiming for his 11th career win with the team.
