Spikes to Welcome Baseball Legend Denny McLain to Park on Wednesday

(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - The legendary Denny McLain, who in 1968 became the last pitcher to win 30 games in the Major Leagues, will be on hand for the State College Spikes ' 7:05 p.m. game against the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals) on Wednesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park .

McLain will sign autographs for fans from approximately 6-9 p.m., throw out a ceremonial first pitch, and appear on the Spikes GameDay Show live from the ballpark at 6:35 p.m.

McLain went 31-6 with a 1.96 earned run average for the Detroit Tigers in 1968, and earned both the American League Most Valuable Player Award and the American League Cy Young Award in that season. The right-hander then went on to start games one, four and six in the World Series against St. Louis, going the distance to win game six and help Detroit win the world championship in seven games.

The right-hander followed that up with a 24-9 campaign in 1969 for the Tigers to win his second straight AL Cy Young Award. McLain won a total of 131 games in a 10-year Major League career and was a three-time All-Star Game selection.

Wednesday's game concludes a six-game homestand for the Spikes, who return home for the final four games of the 2012 regular season from September 2-5. The Spikes will face the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) for two games each during the homestand. Fans will enjoy multiple FIREWORKS shows over the four nights to help make sure the summer goes out with a bang.
