-SPIKES LOOK TO RIGHT THE SHIP AGAINST AUBURN: After suffering two straight tough defeats at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, the State College Spikes face the Pinckney Division-leading Auburn Doubledays for the final time in 2012. Auburn currently holds a two-game lead on Batavia in the division, meaning the Spikes could help play spoiler tonight in the NYPL playoff race. State College is 2-7 against Auburn this year, and 0-4 against the Doubledays at home so far this season.

-LAST GAME: The Spikes were active on the scoreboard early and late, but the Auburn Doubledays broke the game open with a pair of big innings and coasted to a 16-4 win over the Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park last night. Auburn put up a four-run third inning and a five-run fifth in the game. D.J. Crumlich extended his hit streak to eight games and scored a run, while Jimmy Rider tossed a scoreless ninth to become the first Spikes position player to appear on the mound.

-SAMPSON FACES VERY FAMILIAR FOE TONIGHT: Right-hander Adrian Sampson makes his unprecedented fourth straight start against the same opponent tonight as he gets the ball for the Spikes. Sampson, the Pirates' fifth-round draft choice this year out of Bellevue (WA) Community College, has gone 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 14 strikeouts in nine innings over his last three outings, all against Auburn. No Spikes starter has ever before faced the same team four straight times.

-HUDGINS GETS START FOR DOUBLEDAYS: Right-hander Will Hudgins is slated to start for the Doubledays tonight in his second overall appearance with the club. Hudgins, the Nationals' 2012 22nd-round draft choice out of the University of Notre Dame, threw four shutout innings against Mahoning Valley five nights ago in his first outing with Auburn. The Portage, IN native started his year in the Gulf Coast League, where he went 4-3 with a 2.21 ERA in 10 appearances (six starts).

-THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT: Five nights after playing the shortest nine-inning pro game in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park history at just 1 hour, 49 minutes, the Spikes once again take on the team against whom they have played their three longest games of the year. State College and Auburn have played nine-inning games of 3:18 (August 12) and 3:22 (last night). Also, on August 21, the Spikes downed Auburn in 12 innings, 5-4, in a 3-hour, 41-minute affair at Falcon Park.

-SPIKE MARKS: Tyler Gaffney's five triples are tied for third in the NYPL, and his 20 times hit by pitch still lead the loop...Samuel Gonzalez is tied for the NYPL lead with 5 sacrifice flies...State College pitchers have allowed just 17 home runs, least in the NYPL...Clay Holmes is sixth in the NYPL in ERA (1.99) and leads the league in opponents' batting average (.161)
