Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS (Wednesday, August 29): The Hudson Valley Renegades couldn't hang on against their rival Brooklyn Cyclones, falling 7-4 on Wednesday night in front of a record 5,525 fans in the final 2012 regular season home game at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades (46-23) led going into the seventh inning but gave up six straight runs to the Cyclones (42-27) to fall behind and lose the game. The 5,525 fans in the seats eclipsed the 5,523 supporters who turned out for the July 3 game against Brooklyn.
Hudson Valley opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as shortstop Leonardo Reginatto drew a walk from Brooklyn starter Gabriel Ynoa. Second baseman Tommy Coyle singled through the right side to move Reginatto to second. Third baseman Richie Shaffer drew a walk, loading up the bases for Luke Maile. The catcher bounced into a 6-4 force out that allowed Reginatto to race home and score the opening run, making it 1-0 Renegades.
Brooklyn evened up the game in the top of the second inning. Alex Sanchez led off with a double to center field off Renegades starter Taylor Guerrieri. Jayce Boyd bounced a grounder to first that Ryan Dunn muffed, letting Boyd reach safely and moving Sanchez to third. Jorge Rivero grounded back to the mound, and Guerrieri spun to fire to second base. Reginatto's throw to first was wide, and Rivero started to go to second. But Dunn threw to Reginatto to catch Rivero in a rundown, where he was eventually tagged out by Dunn. The rare 1-6-3-6-3 double play allowed Sanchez to score and tie the ballgame 1-1.
The Renegades moved ahead again in the bottom of the third. Reginatto hammered a one-out single up the middle. Coyle bounced to Boyd at first, but his throw to start the double play instead went wide and into left field. Coyle reached first, and Reginatto reached third on the play. Shaffer slashed a line-drive RBI single to center to make it 2-1 Hudson Valley.
Brooklyn didn't score again until the top of the seventh. Phillip Evans led off with a single to left off Renegades reliever Jordan Harrison (0-1), and moved to third on another double from Sanchez, who was lifted for pinch-runner Gavin Cecchini. Boyd lashed a double up the right field line to plate both runners and give Brooklyn the 3-2 lead. The Cyclones didn't let up, as Rivero drew a walk and the runners advanced to second and third on a ground out to third by Nelfi Zapata. Maikis De La Cruz hammered a two-out double into the left- center gap to score Boyd and Rivero, making it 5-2 in favor of Brooklyn.
The Cyclones tacked on two more in the top of the eighth. With one out, Cecchini was hit by a pitch from reliever Rob Finneran, bringing Boyd up to the plate. The first baseman slugged a homer over the left field wall for two more tallies; it was his third round-tripper in as many days, and his fifth of the season. The longball gave Brooklyn a 7-2 lead.
The Reneades put up a late charge in the bottom of the eighth. Designated hitter Justin O'Conner led off with a single to center off reliever Logan Taylor (2-0). Left fielder Joel Caminero hit a grounder to short that looked like a tailor-made double play ball. But after forcing O'Conner at second base, Jeff Reynolds' throw to first went wide, allowing Caminero to race to second. A fly out to center by left fielder Marty Gantt let Caminero reach third with two outs. Center fielder Joey Rickard punched a single through the middle to score Caminero, and came home when Reginatto sliced a double up the left field line off new reliever Beck Wheeler. But Coyle flew out to left to end the inning, and the Renegades went in order in the ninth to end the game.
Guerrieri went five innings, allowing one run on a single hit and whiffing four. Harrison took the loss, coughing up four runs on five hits and three walks in 1.2 innings of action. Finneran gave up two runs on a hit and a hit-by-pitch over his 1.1 frames. Kris Carlson tossed a perfect top of the ninth.
Ynoa took a no-decision, with two runs (one earned) allowed on five hits and two walks over five innings; he fanned four. Taylor took the win, with two runs allowed on four hits against three strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Wheeler gave up a hit and retired one batter, and Tyler Vanderheiden pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout for his 11th save.
The Renegades will try to get back in the win column Thursday at MCU Park in Brooklyn, with righty Eduar Quiñonez on the hill against Cyclones ace Luis Mateo. First pitch is schedule for 7:00 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
