Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - July 14, 2011. The Madison Mallards defeated the Waterloo Bucks 4-1 on Thursday night in front of 6,464 fans at a happy "Duck Pond." The Mallards got back to their winning ways behind a great team effort led by pitcher Estevan Uriegas (Texas A&M) and also snapped their six-game losing streak.
Madison looked good from the very get-go, especially on defense. Uriegas did not allow a hit until the third inning when Chris Magani led off with a single. Uriegas did not allow a run until the sixth inning, but it was unearned as an error led to the only score of the night for the Bucks. In all, Uriegas pitched 6.1 innings and gave up four hits and one walk. He struck out four and is now 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA on the season.
Offensively, the Mallards found their stroke again as the team pounded out nine hits, tripling their total from Wednesday night's game. Justin Parr (Illinois) and Kyle Moody (St. Scholastica) both had two hits, and Travis Parker (St. Louis) had two RBI out of the clean-up spot. The team scored a run in four of their eight turns at the plate, and even took chances on the base paths with four stolen bases.
The biggest offensive hit of the night was turned in by Andrew Wasmund (Madison College). Wasmund belted his first home run of the season to left-center field, and it put the Mallards up 2-0 at the time. In the end, Wasmund's hit turned out to provide the game-winning run.
The win by the Mallards also broke a six-game winning streak by the Bucks. Waterloo had trouble finding open space on the offensive side. Jack DeAno (Purdue) led the team with two hits and Thomas Lindauer (Illinois) drove in the team's only run.
Taking the loss for the Bucks was starter Derek Lamacchia (Quinnipiac). Lamacchia went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two unearned) on eight hits. His record now stands at 3-3.
Dan Tobik (Tennessee - Martin) and Tony Bryant (Oregon State) both came on in relief for the Mallards. Tobik earned the hold after 1.2 innings of work. He allowed one hit and had one walk, but surrendered no runs. Bryant came on to pitch a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the season. He struck out two of the three batters he faced.
The Mallards were able to salvage the series with their win Thursday and will now head to La Crosse for two games against the Loggers starting Friday at 7:05 p.m. Saturday's game will begin at 6:05 p.m. and will also be the final game before the All-Star break for the Ducks.
