Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - July 15, 2011. After snapping a six-game losing streak one night ago, the Madison Mallards are back on the road as they get set to take on the La Crosse Loggers at Copeland Park Friday at 7:05 p.m. The game will be the first for the Mallards in La Crosse since an 11-9 victory in 14 innings on June 24.
Madison will head into play Friday night on the heels of their best team performance of the second half. The team scored four runs Thursday, matching a second half high set against the Green Bay Bullfrogs on July 7. The nine hits are now the most the team has had in the half. Defense also played well, committing only one error Thursday and look to be on the right track.
The Mallards' offense was efficient without All-Stars Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) and Jordan Owen (Tennessee- Martin) a night ago. In addition to Theunissen and Owen, the Ducks will rely on hitting from Andrew Wasmund (Madison College) and Justin Parr (Illinois), who both came through in the clutch Thursday.
Pitching has been a staple for the Mallards this half. Early struggles by starting pitching has been masked by great efforts from the team's bullpen, and the Mallards hope that good pitching will prevail again Friday as they send starter Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) to the mound to face the Loggers. Shellhorn is 4-1 this season with a 2.01 ERA. The lone loss for the 2011 All-Star came in his last appearance against Wisconsin Rapids. He has faced the Loggers once this season, but it came in the form of his lone appearance out of the bullpen this season. In the team's 8-4 loss on June 5, Shellhorn pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out two.
La Crosse will counter with Jon Surber (Clemson). Surber has a record of 1-0 through five appearances (four starts) with a 6.61 ERA. Surber has not faced the Mallards this season and has pitched 16.1 innings.
The Mallards lead the season series with the Loggers four games to one and will play two games in La Crosse before the All-Star break.
