Odorizzi Brilliant in Naturals' First Win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. - Wil Myers and Mario Lisson both hit their first home runs of the season, while Jake Odorizzi threw five innings of shutout baseball as the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (1-1) defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks 5-3 at Whataburger Field Friday night.

The Naturals got to Hooks starter Ross Seaton (0-1), scoring four runs on eight hits in his five innings of work. The game was scoreless until Northwest Arkansas erupted for three runs in the top of the fourth.

Myers led off the fourth with a single past third baseman Jordan Kreke. After he stole second, Lisson hit a two-run home run over left fielder Jon Singleton to give the Naturals a 2-0 lead. Yem Prades then singled, and a fielding error by Kreke one batter later allowed him to get into scoring position. Ben Theriot singled to left with two outs, scoring Prades to make it 3-0.

Myers added a solo home run in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0. Meanwhile, Odorizzi (1-0) was dealing, allowing just three hits while striking out eight hitters over his five innings of work.

Both starters were lifted for relievers in the sixth. Arcenio Leon came in for the Hooks and allowed one run over two plus innings of work. Leon was lifted from the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and second and no out. Jason Stoffel came on for the Hooks and surrendered a sacrifice fly to Terry Evans hit a sacrifice fly scoring John Whittleman.

Blaine Hardy pitched three innings of relief for Northwest Arkansas. He allowed just one hit over his first two frames, but Kody Hinze hit a two run home run for Corpus Christi (1-1) in the bottom of the eighth to trim the Naturals' lead to 5-2.

The Hooks added a third run in the bottom of the ninth off closer Patrick Keating, and had the tying run on first base with one out. Keating managed to work out of the jam to earn his first save of the season.

The two teams will meet in the rubber game of the series Saturday night at Whataburger Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. Naturals southpaw Noel Arguelles (0-0, 0.00) is set to make his AA debut, while the Hooks counter with right-hander Jose Cisnero (0-0, 0.00). The game can be heard on ESPN 92.1 The Ticket.
