Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - Looking to get in the win column a night after being handcuffed offensively, the Cardinals sent lefty prospect John Gast to the mound in hopes of silencing the Frisco RoughRiders' bats Friday night.

Both pitchers got off the quick starts as Gast retired the first six batters he faced and 11 of the first twelve. Miguel De Los Santos was just as sharp striking out seven hitters in four innings.

After 13 scoreless innings to start the season, Springfield got two across in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-out, two-run triple by Kolten Wong to score Nick Derba and Jose Garcia.

Gast continued to roll into the seventh before allowing a solo homer to Mike Olt to cut the Cardinals' lead in half, 2-1. The lefty finished his night after seven strong innings of work giving up just the one run on three hits while striking out seven.

Springfield added two big insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th on another RBI triple by Wong and Oscar Taveras RBI double off the center field wall.

After a scoreless 8th from Keith Butler in the Cardinals bullpen, Jorge Rondon picked up the save in the 9th despite allowing two hits to secure the 4-1 victory for Springfield.

Springfield will conclude their three game series with Frisco tomorrow afternoon at 2:08pm. Price Cutter and Bar-S Foods will give away 2,500 Cardinals Rally Squirrel T-Shirts to fans entering the ballpark. The Cardinals will send righty Trevor Rosenthal to the hill against fellow righty Barret Loux of Frisco. Tickets are available by visiting the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at springfieldcardinals.com or by calling (417) 863-2143.
