Sanford Mainers News Release
The Keene Swamp Bats came into Goodall Park tonight, first in the West Division and third in summer league ball across the nation with a 20-6 record. The Sanford Mainers on the other hand had won four of their last five games, having a four game win streak broken last night in Holyoke.
The Swamp Bats however, continued their success tonight, as they went on to defeat the Mainers 5-1.
Jerry Ferris made his first appearance and start in a Mainers uniform. The sophomore out of Spring Arbor University pitched well despite receiving the loss. He went six innings, gave up nine hits, allowed only three runs, didn't walk anybody, and stuck out five.
The Swamp Bats got themselves on the board first in the fifth inning. Ferris got Jared Walsh to strike out to start the inning, but gave up a single to right to Fran Whitten. With one out and a 1-1 count on Cameron O'Brien, Ferris dealt a frozen rope home run, good enough for a two-run shot putting the Swamp Bats up 2-0.
In the very next inning with one out, JP Sportman doubled down the right field line. Ferris then got Frankie Schwindle to fly out, and now with two outs he was one out away from getting out of the inning. However, Walsh hit a single to left that allowed Sportman to come around from second and score the game's third run.
Meanwhile, Swamp Bats' starter Scott Simon gave the Mainers offense a difficult time. In six innings of work, Simon gave up only three hits, didn't allow any runs, walked one, and struck out four.
With the score at 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Mainers got themselves on the board for the first time. Brett Armour lead off the inning by reaching base on an error by Swamp Bats short stop, Dylan Moore. On the next play, Armour advanced to third on a single by Will Cooper, but Cooper was thrown out at second trying to advance. Ino Patron would be the next batter, and with one out, hit a sacrifice fly to deep center allowing Armour to come into score.
That was the only run the Mainers were able to get, but the Swamp Bats still had more. In the top of the ninth O'Brien and Moore lead off with back-to-back singles. On the next play, Dylan DelaCruz hit a double to right field forcing O'Brien and Moore to cross the plate, but DelaCruz was thrown out at third trying to stretch his double into a triple.
Kyle Gehrs came into the game in the eighth to start a four out save, but that save was taken away on the two runs in the top of the ninth. He threw only one pitch to the leadoff hitter in the ninth, Jose Torralba, and left the game with an arm injury. Tyler Gauthier came in and struck out to side the end the game.
The Mainers drop their second straight game and fall to 9-15 on the season. Still remaining in third place, the Mainers will take on yet another division leader, the Newport Gulls tomorrow night at Goodall Park in Sanford. Nate Jones will return to the hill after being out for the last couple of weeks. Game time slated for 6:30pm.
