Oakland Roots News Release
Oakland Roots have signed Striker Óttar Magnús Karlsson on loan for the 2022 USL Championship season. The Iceland international comes to Oakland from first year Serie A side Venezia FC.
"It's very exciting to bring in someone from one of Europe's top leagues and to have the connection through ownership to a club like Venezia," said Technical Director Jordan Ferrell. "The experience Óttar has in Europe and with Iceland's National Team will be a welcome addition to our locker room in 2022."
Karlsson made his professional debut for Vikingur at the age of 16 in the Icelandic first division before he signed for the world-renowned Ajax Academy. He remained with Ajax from 2013-2016 before returning to Vikingur. From 2017-2019 Karlsson played professionally in the top divisions of Norway and Sweden before once again returning to Vikingur.
Karlsson joined Venezia in 2020, at the time in Serie B. He was part of the team that earned promotion to Serie A, appearing in six matches and scoring on one occasion. Karlsson was then sent out on loan to Siena of Serie C in August of 2021. Karlsson has represented his National Team on nine occasions, scoring two international goals.
