Oakland Roots News Release

Oakland, CA - On Saturday, December 3rd, 2022, a unique celebration of sports, culture, and social justice will come to the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). As part of their End of Season Celebration and in honor of Oakland's unique place at the intersection of social and cultural revolution, 'Rooted in Power,' will be co-hosted by Oakland Roots, Oakland Soul (the women's team coming in 2023), and the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation.

The event will include a panel discussion moderated by Ameer Hasan Loggins featuring social activists Fredrika Newton, Dr. Nas Mohamed, Abbas Muntaqim, Delency Parham, and Dania Cabello. The evening will also include Oakland Roots' End of Season Celebration, including music, entertainment, awards, and fundraisers.

"Our foundation has long known and explored the different ways in which we can share the rich history of the Black Panther Party through art, education and activism," said Fredrika Newton, president and co-founder of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation. "Our collaboration with the Oakland Roots and Oakland Soul has been both unforeseen and extraordinary. From enriching programs like 'Rooted in Power' to the incredible jerseys that were created with the All Power to the People Project.LLC, we applaud these organizations and have immense gratitude for our collective work."

'Rooted in Power' will also feature the debut of an iconic jersey collaboration between Roots and Soul, their new sports apparel partner MEYBA, the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation, and the All Power to the People Project.LLC. The jersey will be unveiled live at the event for the very first time. A percentage of proceeds of all future purchases of the jersey will go towards helping to support the Foundation's mission; 'to preserve the history, legacy and ideals of the Black Panther Party and its co-founder Dr. Huey P. Newton.'

"We could not be more excited to launch our partnership with MEYBA by collaborating with the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and the All Power to the People Project.LLC on jerseys that not only help preserve Oakland's culture and history, but push the boundaries for what soccer apparel can mean," said Roots and Soul Chief Marketing Officer, Edreece Arghandiwal.

'Rooted in Power' is free to the public. Tickets to the panel portion of the 'Rooted in Power' are available for purchase now and include entry to the End of Season Celebration that is open to the public in the OMCA Garden.

"History has shown that we do things differently in Oakland. For decades, The Town has been at the forefront of activism, social justice, and community empowerment; it should be no surprise this legacy appears in all aspects of Oakland life, including our sports," said Lori Fogarty, Director and CEO of Oakland Museum of California. "We're thrilled to host this special event in partnership with our neighbors Oakland Roots, Oakland Soul and our new neighbor, the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation, and to celebrate the launch of their new jerseys that symbolize what makes Oakland so special and so powerful."
